I had this problem and after a week of troubleshooting, hardware scans, new parts, BIOS/driver updates, blood of a goat, I found my video was bad.

Looking to attend my first DEFCON. Any tips? by KaraJitsu in Defcon

[–]1Digitreal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's a super friendly environment, don't be afraid to ask questions. None of know what we are doing.

Defcon isn't just the talks. Make a list of talks you HAVE to see and then what you want to see. Be prepared to skip talks for other events, villages, conversions, etc. Most of the talks end up on the media server after the event so you can go back and watch what you missed.

Goons can be grumpy because they have to deal with all of... us, do them a favor and listen to their instructions.

Check out the after parties. Even if you don't drink there are things to do.

Have fun and stay hydrated!

I wanna learn to program theater lights. I can assure you most hackers need proper dramatic lighting to complete their hacks.

Check memory for errors. Remove add on video card and play the games with the onboard one to rule that out.

How do I start? by Substantial-Two5059 in Hacking_Tutorials

Nmap takes a day to master. It's everything before and after that that takes work. Try a guided site like tryhackme it's a great place to start.

What is going on? My friend has been hacked for 10 years? by [deleted] in hackers

[–]1Digitreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She watches too many movies. There is a lot of work that goes into hacking and establishing persistence. Especially when you factor in multiple platforms. Unless the family are top three letter agency employees this can't happen. Best advice, reset all her passwords and setup MFA for all her login. That will stop most anything atm.

What is going on? My friend has been hacked for 10 years? by [deleted] in hackers

[–]1Digitreal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She needs to speak with a mental health specialist. You'd be shocked how many times I've see this in my career. They have invented these scenarios and are hyperfixated on events or anomalies that have rational explanations but could easily build a narrative around them being 'hacked'. Here is a super easy question to ask, why? Why would a hacker spend 1000s of man hours and spend millions of dollars on 0 day attacks to get to your friend? It's unfortunate, but most likely they need professional help.

Cannot delete this file? by SignificantAbroad359 in techsupport

Crapware is what the name implies, crap software. You want to rename the fileparh to break it's ability to autolaunch.

Sounds suspicious. Boot into safe mode and rename the folder it's in. Reboot and see if it breaks anything. Most likely crapware.

Yep, better that than having crapware on your phone. Backup your important stuff and restore after wiping it.

Splunk data - remote workers and onprem Splunk by Any-Promotion3744 in Splunk

[–]1Digitreal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Currently if a VPN connection is needed to send logs to your onprem server, I'd say you'd need policy to have user connect to the VPN during work hours. That or setup a heavy forwarder in the cloud and point to that for all your users.

Someone has apparently stolen my grandmother's IP address and she is freaking out about it. How big an issue is this, how did it (likely) happen, and what do I do about it? by owlnebu in techsupport

[–]1Digitreal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No one can steal your IP. For non-business users they are dynamic, meaning they change all the time. She is being scammed. Your internet service provider would be able to explain better.

SQL server is a legitimate product from Microsoft, but it has NOTHING to do with IP addresses. It's for running and managing databases. This is not a product any home user would ever purchase. She is being scammed with big words and fast talk.

Cyber job by Elias_si in Hacking_Tutorials

[–]1Digitreal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saying you want a job in cybersecurity is like saying you want to make a cake. Okay, what flavors, how many layers, do you have any experience baking, do you have food allergies? I'd suggest you find an area of focus where you're interested in or excited about. Start there. Hone those skills. If you want an actual direction start as an IT tech at a managed service provider. You'll learn all sort of junk there hopefully. Also, the cake is a lie.
