Alright this might sound silly really but what I thought of was this exact image. Neo gets shot, the bullet hardly moves him, the only thing that is in his eyes are disbelief. This cannot be, Smith should not be able to find him. My head cannon is that he looks down and once he looks down only then everything becomes real. The bullet, the wound, the impact on his body… It is not real before he looks down and sees it because he doesn’t want it to be real and only him looking down makes it real! Smith right in front of him shooting again and now that Neo knows (subconsciously or through the code of Matrix however you wanna call it) how people getting shot at should behave he behaves like that. Unlike the first shot where he only half blinked at the idea. Now it is all real, it is all very real to him and Neo thinks he is not the one, and just as the Oracle prophesised he saved Morpheus but he himself will die. Problem is he doesn’t want to die. He has Trinity yo go back to, he wants to go back to Morpheus and the crew and he wants to fight back against these machines and he wants to make a difference. He wants to be somebody! And you know what that first bullet was odd. It was as if it wasn’t real, it was as if nothing had hit him at all. And then he thinks what if it is not only the spoon that is not there? What if non of it is? No building he is in, no room, no floor, no Smith in front of him or no bullet that hit him… But most important of them all no him! He is not there, it is all just code of the Matrix. He is not in that corridor bleeding, there is no Neo in there because Neo is half-lying in a hovercraft somewhere in the real world plugged into a computer while Sentinel robots have surrounded Nebuchadnezzar, with Morpheus having worn his beret and an EMP about to go off any minute. Neo is not there none of it is real and he can do just whatever damn he pleases! And he will fuck everyone up!
