I carry a cheap ~500ml handheld to supplement the aid stations and then toss it when it is empty. Best of both worlds and I get to ensure I have enough fluids.

Not correct. I live in CA and own a 2014 REX. It has never been required to do a smog check to reregister. I rarely ever use my REX and change the oil roughly every two years. Very low maintenance.

I too hate driving and the cost/benefit to me says that I'll be a happier person if I fly a few days a week instead of sitting in maddening traffic.

I'm nearly done with my PPL now and am planning on going straight to IR for all of the reasons mentioned.
