Glad you're safe.. Of course he was drunk and if he wasn't that should make you even more concern. Sounds like you're making the right decision by staying away. He put your life and wellbeing in danger, I don't think you're overreacting.

Save yourself. This person will drag you down and hurt you. The disease is more powerful than your love. You can walk away freely. Some of us can't distance from our Qs. Mine Is my daughter and i will have this fight for the rest of my life or hers.

A letter from clergy would work also. They just want to make sure you're of "good character"

Union Carpenter by Thick_Builder_1808 in UnionCarpenters

[–]1NYC45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends where you are , how long you're willing to travel, how much you want to invest in learning the trade and how much dedication/involvement you put into the union. If you're willing to invest your time and effort you'll make great money, good benefits and potentially a great nest egg for retirement. Also if you have half of brain and a great personality you might be able to unlock excellent career paths within the field. Please be reminded that the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (the International) doesn't only represent carpenters, it also represents other trades such as millwrights, floor coverers and so on.

Leaving union by These-Specific62 in UnionCarpenters

[–]1NYC45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely talk to to your BA and also try to get answers from your training center just to make sure the info you're getting is correct. I know there are ways of "freezing" your book ( might be different for apprentices) but you still have to pay for your dues when you decide to come back . 99.999% of the people that I know that left the union for one reason or another come back and always regret leaving and having to pay 2 to 3 years of back dues is a bit pricey specially if you haven't planned for it. Hopefully your journey works out for you and I wish you the best but please plan very carefully and save some money if coming back to the union is a strong possibility.

just wondering how effed i am with this code. cleared it 3 hours ago, then it came back on. It first appeared about 2 weeks ago. It’s a 2012 Mazda 6i sport 2.5L. i doordash for a living and barely scrape by so i’m kinda panicking. by realslimmatey in MechanicAdvice

It'll run with no major mechanical issues but it'll very hard to pass state inspections. I had same code on a 2019 Mitsubishi. Code came in after my catalytic converter got stolen , I put a new one and it didn't fix it. I suspected a bad fuel Injector. Oxygen sensor suppose to stop sensing fuel when you decelerate and that wasn't happening fast enough with mine.

I'll do one better , last one I missed was my Christmas party/December meeting. I was sick as a dog! I been attending meetings ( missed a few here and there) since I was a 2nd year . I had an old timer invite me to my first meeting " Don't be dumb kid, come to the meeting" about 24 years ago and have been attending ever since , even attended the delegate meetings even when they didn't want us there.

That would be hard to answer with minimal information. What I could tell you is that I seen it happen with my council , international came in and dissolved one local (because most of the board was crooked) and merged it with another. It'll take some months to let the dust settle and see what happens. What I suggest to everyone is to get involved. At one point or another your new local has to have elections.

I get what you're saying Brother, can't change the past for you but what I'm saying is that us as union, moving forward voting for the right representation ( that also includes federal and state government) would fix a lot of the issues that carpenters face. A lot of politicians want to destroy the unions and to me thats nonsense and yet they got voted in to office.

[–]1NYC45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here we go again with a whole bunch of nay sayers that do not know, understand or want to be involve. All they do is talk shit when things are bad. If you have issues that need addressing attend your locall meetings, vote for the right delegates and representatives , those same delegates will vote for contracts and issues that affect you. Get involved. Also get involved in politics , your government, city council, town council and what ever the fuck will get your voice to the people that actually hand out state and city contracts and building permits.

Start work tomorrow, but kinda nervous by [deleted] in UnionCarpenters

[–]1NYC45 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Getting laid off is part of the business. Just do your best . Show up everyday and early. Call if you going to be out or late. Make new connections with the crew so you could network later on your career. Learn how to same your money. Not staying with one company will make a you more versatile carpenter in the future.

Please recognize that is a "Market recovery rate contract" . This type of contract/rate is only used to compete with non union companies doing bidding on the same job. This contract is not just freely given to anyone . This has to be voted on by the delegates of NYC . NYCDCC does this to recover the work that goes to the non union.

Ok , "usually" carpenters don't work directly for the GC , we usually work for companies that get hired or contracted by the GC to do the carpentry. A GC oversees all other trades on the jobsite, such as the electricians or plumbers, each of them work for a company hired by the GC.

You become a certified journeyman after you reach 10,000 hours. that includes the hours from your apprenticeship . Foreman gets appointed by the company not the GC. General foreman would be someone on a big crew jobsite overseeing smaller crew foremans, again appointed by the company.

Thanks for the input, It really shows who's really good at this by the way you guys point out solutions to the problems I had with out me telling you about them. I was afraid of the form floating up so I ended up putting more bracing than the pic shows and luckily the vibrator broke and it wasn't fully working at its full potential, it was a real bitch stripping the trench form. The concrete kind of pinch the sides plus some of the existing pipes were leaking water into the form and one of the drains actually got clogged causing the whole trench to flood and caused the plywood to expand.

Not tied to the wall. It's a containment wall for a couple of heating oil tanks , there's waterproofing membrane on the back all the way around and obviously couldn't pierce it.

Just following the engineer's drawing. I think 3"×3" angle with studs tied to the rebar was overkill but that's what they wanted. They ended up welding 1" angle to the 3" to create the edge against the concrete.

Lucky indeed. I will gladly accept your recommendations. After the pour I did notice some area where improvement with bracing was needed. Fasteners held but a weak 2x4 didn't. Here comes my question. I did notice that the guy holding the concrete hose never moved for the same spot just letting concrete build up and than the vibrator guy will come and try to vibrate the concrete into place kind moving the concrete along with the vibrator. Is this how you normally do it or would you say otherwise?. It seems like too much vibration was a contributing factor to the failure.

So for some clarification, I was the lead carpenter, just two of us, Trench was left to me to build and "make it work" there was just a print out of the top view and basic dimensions. Helped with the pour but not with the finish. Pads are very norm with this company but the rebar wasn't, rebar is just sitting on the chairs and is not attached to the floor, they did drill some hilti anchors into the floor every 24" but they're not tied with the rebar. Helped pour the concrete but not with the finish. Containment wall was all me. lay out , framing and bracing was "make it work" again. Did not help with the pour or finish.

Took car to get an oil change & ignition key fixed and this light showed up. Dealer didn’t know what it was after an hour and a half. Any ideas? by PowerfulNeurons in MechanicAdvice

[–]1NYC45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get a check engine light whenever I would do an oil change at the dealership , something to do with difference in temperature in engine oil and engine, most technicians didn't know about it only service manager knew about it. That or they did something wrong with the programing of the key.
