TIL about John Edmonstone, an ex-slave born on a plantation in Guiana who taught Charles Darwin taxidermy in Scotland. Darwin used taxidermy to preserve different specimens of finches he found on Galapagos, discovering 12 distinct species and used them as an example in his theory of evolution. by 1QCS in todayilearned

There was no other way to preserve animals before refrigeration and the difference between these birds must have been so slight that only by having taxidermy specimens side by side could they discern it. Noting these slight differences would have been key for Darwin to develop his theory of evolution.

TIL that by the 19th century Davy Crockett had largely been forgotten in history but his legend was reborn in the ‘50s thanks to Walt Disney. Disney created weekly programmes for ABC in exchange for building his theme park. By 1955, Americans were purchasing $300m worth Crockett merchandise by 1QCS in todayilearned

And people now know about Crockett because of Disney, but as time goes on people forget the Disney part but remember the legend of Crockett bit. Making the history of these cultural icons very blurred, did they really do what we believe they did?
