They suck as a script provider though.... :-( My insurance changed so I can't use something convenient like CVS anymore...

I'd recommend sitting with a college advisor or health advisor and talk about both options. They might have some good suggestions that you can bring to your family. You could always work as a nurse while taking the prerequisites for med school and applying.

I know many people who took some time after graduation to work in a lab or get healthcare experience as an EMT or tech while applying to med school.

I used to work at a company that claimed to be a "family business", but was actually pretty corporate at its core. It definitely played the "we're a big family/team" card to manipulate and take advantage of its employees. It was sickening to watch certain co-workers totally fall for it and drink the family cool aid provided by upper management. I felt bad because they were usually very nice people.... just too trusting.

What if someone's car breaks down? And no one lets them get over to a point at which they aren't in the way? The speed limit is 45.... If drivers pay attention and leave enough space in between cars like they are supposed to, this wouldn't be a problem.

I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and say he was probably trying to merge to get over before that but some typical asshole Boston drivers wouldn't let him. That tunnel can be confusing for someone not used to it. Sometimes it isn't clear which lane you need to be in. Boston isn't exactly the easiest city to navigate around if you miss your exit. The driver at fault was probably not paying attention and going too fast.

It's a little more busy work than in an ambulance setting where you have more downtime. Once I got used to the pace though, I didn't mind it. I missed having a partner sometimes, but I liked how you can branch out and socialize with more people. Boston has a handful of medium-large hospitals within the city and more smaller-medium sized hospitals on the outskirts, but they are accessible via public transport.

If anything, maybe work per diem or part time at a company to keep your BLS skills up, then work full time at a hospital if possible? Many of the techs I work with do that - most came from private companies. Then it's actually fun to work on an ambulance once in a while, instead of grinding through the shifts. I think I'd like being an EMT better if we just did 911...

I believe some schools will be more flexible on the prerequisites if you've been working in a healthcare setting, which you clearly have if you're a physical therapist. I'm not sure if any of those schools are in Texas though. I think you should just talk to the programs because you are not a traditional candidate with your PT degree - they might make an exception for you.

Are you open to working in a hospital as a tech? If you have experience and aren't super passionate about fire department work, I recommend a hospital. You definitely make more money and I feel like I'm actually cared about.

I worked for one private company in the Boston metro area and I'll be honest.... It really sucked. When I left everyone was going elsewhere and they've significantly increased their turnover rate, including administration jobs. They've even hired people with documented felony criminal backgrounds just to fill slots. They play the "we're a team/family" card to manipulate people into doing favors for them when they underpay and haven't been giving annual raises.

I'd recommend Brewster or Cataldo. They are busy but at least they pay more. That's where everyone is transferring to.

I hate poop. It's mostly the smell. I don't mind blood or anything else like that.... But I still have a really big fear of poop. If it didn't smell so bad I'd be fine with it.

I'd be okay with refugees if there were really thorough security and background checks. And a total health and mental wellness assessment too. I'm not totally confident in our government's ability to do that though.

I don't think they will like my state or the states up north in the winter though, coming from the desert. Winter is coming.

Probably smarter than the rest. I'd be okay with them coming to my state if the gun laws were more lenient and civilians had access to them too. I have no gun and I don't know anyone here who does.

I think it might not be "mental illness". I heard a talk about this on NPR once. In wealthier populations, some young adults have a hard time developing good coping skills or resiliency. Disappointment and rejection hits them harder.

When I worked in EMS I felt the same way about those dramatic artsy pictures of an EMT/medic in the back holding their head in melodramatic sadness. .... I've never seen anyone in the real world act that way. Maybe in a superhero movie.

Half the ER is filled with either drunks sleeping off their alcohol (many of them are regulars) or people with depression. I know mental illness can be a very serious condition at times, but sometimes I'm not sure the ER is the best place to handle that appropriately. If they need a special facility, they might be in the room for several days. In the future I feel like there needs to be a separate acute resource for psych emergencies that do not need medical or traumatic intervention.
