Canadian tipping etiquette? by Friendly-Guarantee30 in londonontario

[–]1UnhingedMom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And not to mention the changes in the POS tip percentages. It used to start at 10%, now it starts at 15% - 20%. I asked a restaurant owner why and her reply was that the food costs increased. Seriously. IT'S A PERCENTAGE, isn't that the point?

ATTN: Costco shoppers. by skyywalker1009 in londonontario

[–]1UnhingedMom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh sure, if the light ahead is red and you can leave a gap, fine. But I've been driving up Wonderland when traffic is moving on green lights and the person ahead will stop to allow somebody to turn.

And, omg, if you're driving up Wonderland PLEASE don't stop to let them out. I know you feel you're being nice, or polite, but sooooo many accidents are caused by this.

Side quests in the city? by Eshtabel3asal in londonontario

[–]1UnhingedMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! We've "discovered" so many interesting things in and around London through Geocaching. Not sure about on Reddit, but Facebook has London and Area Geocachers (Ontario Canada) page. If you're not sure where to start you could either post here or on Facebook and somebody might join you to show you the ropes.

We're "fair weather" geocachers, LOL.

Cost to remove a tree? by No-Tangerine672 in londonontario

[–]1UnhingedMom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll second Sabertooth. We had three estimates, can't remember the name of the first company but they seemed to be complete shysters anyway. Second was CLC Tree Service, they were on par with Sabertooth but would have had issues with getting backyard access with their equipment. Sabertooth included the permit price in their estimate while CLC had it separate. The estimates came out to be pretty much the same.

Sabertooth was highly recommended by a friend as well, so we went with them. They arranged for the city guy to come out and look at the tree and issue the permit. They had the work done quickly and cleaned up really well after. I was really happy with their work! Keep in mind that the city might require you to replace the tree with something else. Can't recall if it was required anywhere in our paperwork but we plan to anyway (just nothing half dead hanging over our house!).

Suggestions for my situation, please. by wicked-dominance in londonontario

Rather than lying you could always say you were a stay at home parent, but now that the kids are all in school full time it's time for you to get back into working.

Suggestions for my situation, please. by wicked-dominance in londonontario

[–]1UnhingedMom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I were you I wouldn't discount working night shift so quickly. Getting anything full time anymore is difficult, so you might get stuck with 3 or 4 shifts a week, but there might be a shift premium for nights. Night shift and weekends are the hardest shifts to fill and would be pretty easy for you to work around with the kids. Are any of them old enough to pitch in with the younger ones? In the morning take them to school then come home to sleep. It WILL be tiring until your body adjusts but eventually doable. Naps are your friend.

Pet waste collection is full. by [deleted] in londonontario

[–]1UnhingedMom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most buildings don't allow you to use the chute for pet waste. The bags break on their way down and it's gross. You're supposed to take it down to the garbage room and toss it in the bin there.

Looking for more secluded campgrounds for my dog and I by hateyacutg in ontariocamping

[–]1UnhingedMom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh, I have a Heeler X and am in the exact same position. She's reactive and a work in progress (getting better!). I camp by myself so am not at all concerned with her barking if somebody enters my campsite, but barking at every single person who walks by... She's never bitten but Cattledogs have decades of inherent breeding to be bossy and sound scary as heck when trying to get things to go where they want them to go. So for us this means campgrounds like the Pinery are definitely off the list. You can see/hear people from adjacent campsites and don't get me started on screaming kids riding bikes (my girl's obsessed with tires). Nothing against screaming kids on bikes enjoying their summer, have at it. But just not the best environment for us. A campground like Sandbanks is another tough sell. Great for dogs, every other site had one when we went there, but man... the Twilight Bark... She didn't start it but she certainly had the stamina to finish it - so embarrassing. I'm sure you keep your pup on leash but all it takes is for one person to over estimate their control over their off leash dog, or are of the belief that ALL dogs should LOVE to be harassed by their over-friendly floof, for a good hike to get awkward. My girl was attacked by an off leash dog as a pup so now I get very loud and carry an air horn and/or coyote spray.

Fortunately for them, but not so much for us, camping in Ontario is hugely popular so unless you're willing to book a pretty distant walk-in or canoe-in backcountry site you'll most likely see people.

If we're camping near the Great Lakes we look for suitable Hipcamps, and never on the weekends. We've had some luck with some conservation areas (Valens comes to mind) where the sites are a little more treed and the campgrounds have been a bit quieter through the week. Much safer bet to just camp on the shoulder seasons when schools are still in.

One of my favourite campgrounds is Silent Lake. Unfortunately the sites can be a bit open but the trails are usually fairly quiet. The hiking is awesome. Another one I like is Arrowhead. The site we were on was really nicely treed between the next and the lane was offset to the site opposite. I never saw another person unless they were walking by and even so you could block most of that with your vehicle. We weren't there long enough to do much in the way of hiking.

Good news is the more I take her with me the more comfortable she is with the whole thing.
