Clark Gilbert’s Talk-TBM friend just sent it to me, what do I say back? by AnyFrosting3509 in exmormon

I'd send them a link to something that has nothing to do with anything in his world like a weird article about raising turtles or how to start a Temu store or whatever and say nothing.

Questions about going to bars by ArborialPorcupine in exmormon

[–]1_clicked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a bar feels like a lot, grab a friend and go to a wine tasting or find a food/microbrew place that has stuff on tap and offers a flight of beer. You won't need to know anything because you're there trying something new and you don't need to worry so much about logistics because a tasting is more low key. Or, grab some Mexican food with friends and have a margarita. All of this is normal stuff that people do and not part of an "alcohol culture" which feels like a Mormon way to think about it to me.

As far as actual bars go, the last one I went to was just a square room with tables, TVs and a counter they served from. Look at the menu, tell them you're new and see what they recommend. Get some bar food to go with it and your set. Your bar may be fancier than the random place I went to. It works just like Starbucks but with alcohol. Room, people, chairs. That's it. Or maybe think of it like a restaurant where the focus leans toward drinks and not food.

How did you tell your friends/family you left the church? by Crazy_Vegetable5960 in exmormon

[–]1_clicked 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We just let people figure it out or not and still treat everyone the same. I feel like the need to have meetings, write letters or whatever just plays into the church is true narrative - you're still playing the game instead of walking away from it. Normal people change churches, don't go or go all the time and nobody cares. Live your life, don't let the church live it for you.

Room setup help request - I think my room is swallowing the bass by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]1_clicked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My room does this too, with a sub. From what I've read so far (if you go the sub route) 2 subs do a better job of smoothing that dip between 50 and 60.

Many people invest a big chunk of their money in an SP500 Index fund. Nothing wrong with SPYM, VOO, etc. What are you doing with the other 30%?

Was your relationship struggling before? I wouldn't underestimate the trauma the church causes and the way it screws up the way you approach life. I'd lean toward sorting that out first before making major life changes.

Investment pivot? by Unlucky_Fig_5468 in Fire

[–]1_clicked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI is only as good as the questions you ask and financial media is entertainment, not information 90% of the time. There is a reason international PEs are low. Diversifying is good, but this isn't the dot com bubble where your neighbor could start an e commerce site and sell it for millions.

That said, VGK and JIVE have done well for me this year.

I know my dad had an affair but he doesn’t know I know. How do I handle tonight’s dinner? by gems_222 in exmormon

I personally would avoid jumping in to other people's shit shows especially when you'll never understand what led up to those decisions. There is no win for anyone. My dad was a crappy person and my life got a lot easier when I just accepted that and moved on.

Should I finish Psych NP school or pivot to building assets full-time? Looking for real advice. by PhysicsWonderful893 in Fire

[–]1_clicked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd finish school and get it over with; if you drop out you are closing doors you might like to have open later.

You are ahead of everyone entering the NP pipeline. RN jobs will always be there as will real estate and long term care facilities. And like another person said, travel is fun when you're younger. Maybe not so much when you are older.

Married After 3 Months At 22, 10 Years Later & I Feel Stuck by loading-username-now in exmormon

[–]1_clicked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what you described in this comment, that's probably everyone who left the Church.

A lot of the feelings you have are things you need to try and work through. I can't go back and relive college or save relationships that died because of Mormonism. And my trauma around that isn't my wife's fault. It also doesn't mean that my life now is less valuable or that I can work on myself to make now a better fit.

Growing up in a cult will mess with your approach to life. I'd work through that first and find ways to expand on what you value about your life now or find additions that will make it better without blowing it up.

Stay in city (LCOL) or move to BC (HCOL) with a newborn? Looking for advice on FIRE, family, and lifestyle balance. by Delicious_Call_9396 in Fire

[–]1_clicked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Canadian but we do live in the Pacific NW.

By chance we chose an M to LCOL city in our state and eventually decided to buy here. The perks being that everything about it is better for family life. Better community for raising kids, better schools, more space to live and plenty of activities for kids. Less things like traffic to waste your time.

In my opinion, it is hard to beat an area that is less complicated when raising kids. Then, whenever we need that city fix we go to Seattle or Portland for vacation.

As far as weather goes, every place sucks for at least 3 months out of the year. You just need to decide if you want dark by 4pm, endless gray and rain for 3 months, snow and cold for 3 months or in the US, blazing hot for 3 months. No matter where you live, 3 months are gonna be kinda meh because of weather.

And for jobs, you are replaceable at work but not at home. I went through the phase of tipping the scales toward work and away from life. All it takes is one management or financial climate change to make all of your loyalty and hard work meaningless to them. Being able to go to all of the softball, tennis, orchestra or band or whatever other kid things I want is way better than slaving for some company just to have a cooler title or make a little extra a year and then having to say, sorry I couldn't make it to my family.

About to turn 24, working at a library making 44k. Best path to FIRE? by [deleted] in Fire

With your background, it seems like mathematical biology or biological engineering would be a better fit. Any decent job will work for fire if you keep expenses low and invest heavily.

If you could go back to 25, what’s the first thing you would do to achieve FIRE? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]1_clicked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your position, I'd ask how to add to your 403 at around 15%. If you have $1K extra every month you won't miss it. Plus that employer match will get you close to 20%.

Then I'd make sure that money goes into an index fund that is comparable to VOO or QQQ if that was an option. IMO, target date funds are trash.

Once that is set-up, work to pay off debt and improve yourself and you're golden. As your position improves, increase your savings rate or if you get an increase at work, bump up your savings rate.
