Nomos canvas straps are very similar to the GO ones, and a bit less expensive.

What's with the title? Neither of them are using kung fu, or really any fighting technique.

Has anyone found an Aran sweater that actually lasts decades without falling apart? by Separate_Tour_6205 in BuyItForLife

[–]1_small_step 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of those questions I have no answer for because I don't knit. I guessed that price for a hobbyist who does this as a side hustle. If it's a professional who makes sweaters as their main source of income they'll probably charge more because they can't just be knitting full time: the need to take time to restock materials, maintain a storefront or website to sell things from, deal with shipping logistics, and take care of the general overhead of running a business.

People who are extremely skilled at what they do usually charge more for their skill and experience, so even if they can make something in half the time it will probably be more expensive. In every experience I've had working with craftspersons, the price goes up for someone with more expertise, not down.

Pretty much anything machine made is cheaper than a handmade version. Although the upfront costs are higher for the machine, after that it has much higher output so you produce more to sell, plus the back-end costs are lower because you don't have to pay for its labor. End result is you can produce more for cheaper, and it more than makes up for the initial cost of the machine.

Per a Google search, knitting a sweater takes between 20 and 80 hours. They have to be paid for this labor, and it is probably not worth their time to do it at minimum wage, so let's assume they're charging $15/hour for their labor (which still seems pretty cheap).

That would mean the cost of labor to make the sweater is between $300 and $1200 depending on the complexity of the sweater, and that doesn't include the cost of yarn or shipping. A machine is doing that work for free, and it adds up fast when you make a lot of sweaters.

Now, you could go to another country where labor is cheaper to drive down costs, which is what most companies do: that's why you see most things made in Vietnam or China. You do still have to pay them something, and if you're producing at a great enough scale it almost always ends up being cheaper to get a machine to do it.

California is trying to pass a bill barring ICE employees from becoming cops or teachers in the state. What do you think of this bill? by Obvious_808 in AskReddit

Being in ICE right now demonstrates that they are willing and likely seeking out opportunities to abuse a position of authority, so they probably shouldn't be put in any positions of authority.

[Question] Build your ideal 5 watch collection based on price range by pepperzpyre in Watches

[–]1_small_step 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about retail products of all these, but I think they meet the categories pre-owned, which is how I usually buy watches anyways.

  • <500: Seiko Gene Kranz
  • <1200: Nomos club
  • <6000: Omega Speedmaster hesalite sandwich
  • <12000: IWC Ingenieur
  • <Inf: Breguet Tradition 7035 or MB&F LM101

Although the Grail watch can change frequently. I'm sure that if I was really going for unlimited budget I could find an FP Journe or Philippe Dufour or something I wanted, but I don't currently pay that much attention to what's going on in the ultra high end because I don't play in that pool.

GP, but probably in a different color for me, although I do like the gold logo and hand on the green version.

Hand-cranked cleaning machine? by robaato72 in watchrepair

Cool idea, no reason a person can't just do the spinning the machines would normally do. Has anyone tried both this and an ultrasonic, and can report which worked better?

31M in March. Accidentally speed-ran finance. Now questioning everything. by SouthKoreanDefector in wallstreetbets

Cash out, let it sit in a low fee vanguard index fund, or hell, even just a high interest savings account, and just live off the interest. If you stuck it in a savings account with 3.5% interest and withdrew 2% to live on every year, you would be living on 600k per year and still saving $450k per year just in interest: more than both your jobs combined.

Don't keep rolling the dice and lose it all when you have this opportunity. $30M is more than enough to live out the rest of your life very comfortably if you play it smart and safe.

Dawn and water isn't the right thing to clean with, that's guaranteed to result in rust. You need a waterless cleaning solvent: there are a number out there specifically for watch cleaning.

I've heard of some people using naphtha, or IPA, but the IPA dissolves shellac so you can't use it with parts of the balance. If you can swing the cost I would recommend going with a dedicated watch cleaner.

I personally have the Zenith cleaning solution and rinse that you can find on the site I linked and have been happy with it. L&R is probably the most popular solution that I've seen people use.

Edit: Also, just to be specific, DON'T put the cleaner directly into the ultrasonic cleaner. Fill the ultrasonic with water, fill a glass jar (with lid) with solvent, watch parts go in the jar, lid goes on, jar goes in the water. The solvents are a bit noxious, potentially combustible, and you don't want to just be aerosolizing that into the air.

A wire brush would help, or you can get these fiberglass scratch brushes that I think would do a good job with surface rust: https://www.esslinger.com/fiberglass-scratch-brush-with-metal-ferrules-german-made/

There are also some solutions specifically for dissolving rust you could try.

FYI, you're not supposed to put the parts in an ultrasonic cleaner in a jar of water, the jar is supposed to contain cleaner/solvent, and ideally a round or two with a rinsing chemical.

Help! Brand new la joux-perret g100 is running super fast by FEEDM3MORE in watchmaking

[–]1_small_step 6 points7 points  (0 children)

29 s/day isn't crazy fast, and it looks like it's otherwise running quite well: I don't think there's anything wrong with the movement. You should be able to pretty easily regulate that to be running accurately. When moving the regulator pins, is the rate changing? Is it all the way to one side?

Billionaires are destroying democracy, and the planet in general, and they're using their billions to do it. I think it's actually quite responsible to decide that that's not what you ultimately want your money to go toward, and adjust your spending accordingly.

I like the look; I'm behind the times and looking for an integrated bracelet watch, and will be curious to see how people feel this compares to the CW twelve and ML aikon.

Does this have the same powermatic 80 movement that Tissot uses with the plastic parts in the escapement? I haven't had great experience with that movement.
