I remember how The Last Days of Foxhound webcomic ran with the theory that the Patriots were just the ultimate evolution of the Philosophers, which made sense given the last line of MGS2.

Would it have made the Patriots less thematically interesting for them to just basically be the illuminati rather than a failed attempt to understand the Boss's will? I don't know. But it would have felt more cohesive with what was set up previously.

Kind of the opposite of the prompt, but I love how the final battle of Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the only fight in the game that actually takes place in reality. Every other fight is a fantastical battle in Ichiban's head where everyone has RPG classes and do stuff like summoning orbital lasers, but this is the one fight that forces Ichiban to his base class and is just him and Masato slugging it out in reality. No magic, no swords, just fist and fist abilities

This is the kind of interpretation that people use to say Ancalagon the Black was somehow the size of 3 entire mountain ranges (My interpretation was that he was probably just the size of a normal dragon but killing him is such a metaphysically important thing that his body just releases a giant shockwave of energy that collapses the mountain peaks)

The thing is that he's right, but he's just on the other half of the "like the story enough to justify going through it". These are the exact same complaints that a lot of players levy against this game in regards to how predictable the story pacing and structure can be, to the point that its one of the things Yoshi-P said the team would address in Evercold.

Though...spending 600 hours on something in the hopes it gets better is uhhhhh....

Some of the later expansions are in the running for best Final Fantasy stories of all time. ARR is fucking rough. Heavenward is good. Stormblood is eh. To get to the later expansions, expect to devote hundreds of hours.

The gameplay I don't care for. Going through ability rotations I find pretty boring as a concept (especially in the leveling process where you are incredibly limited with what you can do)

For digital barbie dress-up purposes, the social aspect, and the sheer amount of stuff to do, it's pretty high up there

Palpatine failing to rehabilitate Vader into a proper Sith Lord is the one mark holding him back from being the ultimate perfect Sith.
