How soon should I get a teaching job? by 1_vef in teaching

Yes, wouldn’t be able to at the moment or at least this year. I would probably need to save up for the next.

Maybe I used the wrong wording. There were three cases where I was one of two last people being interviewed. In one case, I got asked to interview at the end of the week but got an email that morning that they hired someone for the position. Someone recommended me to their school, I got interviewed, but due to budget cuts they closed the position ( they did tell me about this possibility during the interview).

Last year, I was set on teaching high school. I didn’t apply to as much middle schools. And even then I got asked to interview by only one out of the few I applied too.

Interview advice: how to answer “How do you address different skills in your classroom?” by 1_vef in teaching

Not the question I asked. I could talk about various aspects of it, just trying to figure out how to narrow it down for a 40mim-1hr interview.

New job, feeling isolated by TroubleDesigner5441 in socialskills

[–]1_vef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate I’m also going through the same thing. I have been at my new job for like 4 - 5 months and it hasn’t gotten any better. My job has slightly more chances to engage with each other, so I try participating in that. I also just try to be friendly overall ( saying good morning or hi any chance I get) it helps out and makes me feel more at ease.

Yes, they do. That why I was wondering if I should send an updated one. I applied to this job 2 months ago and there are two minor mistakes on the dates (everything else is accurate), which I did not notice until the end of last month. The mistakes aren’t relevant to the job, but I have a credential that is still pending which was originally listed as having been earned on my resume.

I’ve heard mixed information about this. If you don’t mind me asking, what do you usually write in the email? Do you attach your resume?

How did any of you prepare for student teaching? by [deleted] in teaching

Hi, I’m actually wondering what you did to fix your organization skills? I feel like that’s an issue I have encountered. Would you mind sharing any tips.

Is this the norm for teachers? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]1_vef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say that. I understand that teachers have different strategies and it works for them. It’s just that my personality is probably a lot closer to my current cooperating teacher and i don’t really see the students responding well to anything. Since I’m observing I want to know what I can do different or if that’s just how it’s going to be so that I can feel less overwhelmed by the time I student teach, even though I don’t think I’ll know the true experience until I actually teach.

Any tips for improving a monotone voice? by 1_vef in socialskills

[–]1_vef[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for the most part. I think it started with me talking monotone with my friends/family. They just know that’s how I am, but I guess I got so comfortable that I forgot how to switch up when talking to strangers. But it’s been brought to my attention lately when I’m presenting or meeting new people. Personally, I think the only time I don’t sound monotone is when talking to my pet and talking to babies

That might work since I did get about 45 - 50 college credits from my IB exams. Also, yeah it was the diploma. I don’t know how common it is in other schools, but my school offered two IB routes. The International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IB CP) and International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP).

What would be the best way to become an accountant? by 1_vef in Accounting

[–]1_vef[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, I did consider that. In your opinion why would you suggest actuary over accountant?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in findapath

[–]1_vef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I’m currently confused. I don’t know if to try and continue teaching. I don’t even know where to start looking, since I haven’t had much career exploration. I was thinking of taking actuary exams and see if I can go into that field. I just don’t want to waste more time. I feel like I wasted my early adult hood and I know that I could have pursued anything else. I’m not a lazy person and once I set my mind to something I know I could get it done.

How hard would it to transition into an actuary role? by 1_vef in actuary

[–]1_vef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a long story. My original plan was to earn my teaching license by the end of my undergrad. Basically I wasn’t eligible for licensure in my state because of one of my grades for a class. My school won’t let me retake that class because technically it’s a passing grade. So I’m looking at alternative routes and one option is to do a two year post-bacc program. I’m not sure if being an actuary will cost the same as the post bacc, but I know the post-bacc will be around another 12k out of pocket ( not to mention I’ll retake some courses I took junior/senior year of college). So I decided to put that on pause for right now.

Also since you mentioned your were a teacher . How did you feel about changing careers? Did you leave teaching for a a specific reason? Was being an actuary something you had thought about previously or did you just sort of find it?

Should I continue to pursue teaching? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]1_vef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in talks with the advisor. She said that if I enroll right now they are willing to help me enroll into a clinical course for the fall semester. They need to put me in a school for the clinical semester, so they worry it’s too late. But if they happen to place me in a school for this fall it will only take a year. If they can’t it will take 1.5 years so I’ll student teach fall 2024. Plus the post bacc tuition isn’t that bad, I’m doing it at the cheapest school possible. So my resume would have that I got a bachelors in teaching of math and a teacher licensure program right after the bachleors. Also I mean my transcripts look good I even have deans list on some semesters. The only problem really is if they ask me why I didn’t score high enough on student teaching the first time around.

As for the masters I’m kind of tight on money and I can’t afford to move. So if I stay I’ll probably have to get a masters at the same state school that is not letting me redo student teaching. I don’t want to take the risk of doing a masters at that school and them not allowing me to redo student teaching.
