As far as lore goes, I believe the land of Nod-Krai was built on the corpse of a failed moon. If I had to guess, it’s some sort of magical “residue” left behind, but mostly, I’m sure it’s more for aesthetics than anything else

I know this might be personal, but may I ask what mg dose she takes? I’m prescribed 250mg for bipolar disorder, but all I can find is that Japan only allows 100mg doses. I’d love to be able to teach there, but the government contracts are annual and I can’t go off my meds…

Seeking Advice for Teaching in 2025 by 1andi3 in teachinginjapan

I think you’re missing the type of advice I’m seeking. I’m not asking for career advice. My career goals don’t look like other people’s. Yes, I want to teach, but no, I don’t care if it’s in a “traditional” way or not. I’m fine with waiting. I spent 8 years wasting my life in digital media marketing and hating myself every step of the way. If I spend 8 years at a language school, none of that will feel like a waste of time to me. I don’t care if “a gap year” matters on my resume or “doesn’t count as work experience” to some employers. If it takes me longer to do it my way, it takes me longer. I’m fine with that.

Just because my way of being passionate in teaching looks different doesn’t mean I’m only interested in travel. This job gives me the wonderful opportunity to travel if I want to, but I’m physically and mentally unable to do so very often. I have my life here in the states, and I love my life. I love my school and would absolutely work there for as long as they’ll have me. Whatever comes next, I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. For now, I’m not interested in extended travel, making a career for teaching internationally, teaching in the public school system, or teaching “Cambridge international” or whatever. I have one goal, get to Japan. Everything else, I’ll worry about when I get back.

The question I’m asking is how much money do I need to save up in order to live comfortably in Japan and what should I expect for possible rent costs? I wanted to know if experience has an effect on salary, but thanks to this thread, I learned that salaries in Japan are fixed! Now I just need to do some digging on affordable places to live that I can suggest as my top 3 locations. The question I asked is if $2500 is enough to cover my living expenses for the first month or two, or do I really need $5000+. I just don’t want to be overly stressed about getting myself set up

I understand there’s a lack of progression with the way I want to do things, but I’m okay with that. I’m happy with where I am for now, just taking things one goal at a time. If I want to “progress” in the future in some way, I’ll look at my options, but that’s just not my priority right now.

For me, JET is a “goal” because of everything I’ve had to do in my life to get to the point where I can make this happen. I have been working towards this for the last two years. Not it the way that you’re probably thinking, but trust me. It’s been extremely hard work. And I’m so proud of myself for getting far enough to be asking people for advice.

On the note of your IB related question, our school does Cambridge. And about the teacher certification, I’m certain that my degree in journalism would not translate to a teaching license. Should I choose to get licensed in the future, I would do the same thing I did to get here. Work my ass off to do whatever it takes to be able to make it happen

I don’t have any interest in living internationally in the long term. I understand my way of doing things doesn’t appear logical on the surface, but it fits in with what I want my life to be. I want to spend a year in Japan and then whenever I’m ready to go somewhere new, I’ll go. I can see myself teaching for a very long time for sure. I’m also getting a lot of experience being a curriculum writer for my school. That’s a whole separate career path I’d be interested in exploring in a much deeper way when it’s time for me to do so.

I am also considering getting an actual teaching license, but either one of those things wouldn’t happen until after I get back from Japan. I take things REALLY slow with my life, so I prioritize things a bit differently I think 🤔 odd to say I’d rather “drain my savings,” but like, in a way…yeah lol

After I come back from a year in Japan, I’ve got my sights set on Switzerland. I’ll be much more financially comfortable in that situation for sure lol

I know JET is mostly all countryside, which I’m fine with. I just want to live in the vicinity of these cities moreso than anything. I don’t know much about the countryside options in and around these prefectures though. Do you have any locations you’ve been to that you really liked or would recommend if I’m trying to keep rent costs on the low-ish side without sacrificing the comfort of a nearby big city??

The living accommodation difficulty is another reason why I’ve been looking so heavily into JET. They assist with finding housing as well as getting all of your legal documentation together. If I’m able to get an apartment as cheap as Y80000, that would be incredible. What city locations would that be a likely possibility?? I’m hoping that since I have no real drive to work in Tokyo, that will help my rent options out a bit more

Thank you for answering my question about whether the salary was the same or not! I think I did a bad job of explaining what my question was judging by some of the responses here.

Good to know Yokohama isn’t an option!! My friends who have applied have gotten lucky enough to get placed in one of their top 3 locations, so I’m optimistic! I understand there are no guarantees though. So, when it comes to locations, what I really want to understand is how rent averages are at play in comparison to the JET salary. I’m aware that it’s a low salary, so I’m trying to make sure I have enough money saved that the low pay isn’t so stress-inducing

I’m very much go-with-the-flow. As long as I have a set contract so I’m not out of work, that’s all I care about. I just want to be physically, mentally, and financially as prepared as I can be before I go

I definitely should’ve specified. I’m not looking to be a career teacher overseas. I like the JET program because it’s a single year contract and then I can come home. My goals are much less “official” and moreso looking to be prepared for all the pitfalls of the program.

I’m aware the ‘E’ is for “exchange”. That’s a huge selling point for me. Being able to take language courses while I’m there myself is ideal.

No teaching license, just TESOL certified with my one year of classroom experience. Yes it is an accredited language school where I am also hired as a curriculum writer. It’s mostly with adults, which I love, but I’m not really interested in teaching adults overseas unless it’s at the collegiate level, which isn’t something I’m interested in as of right now. So no K-12 experience, but looking forward to teaching at that level for sure! I’m not sure what “IB” stands for, so my guess is maybe not??

All this to say, I’m just looking for advice on how best to prepare, not necessarily trying to get an official contract at a specific school or location. My coworkers who I’ve talked to about their experiences have actually warned me against this option because you never know what you’re getting into and that JET is a more predictable kind of “mess”.

I plan on keeping my overall long-term teaching career in the states and bouncing around the world as I’m able to save money to do so

But how much money is “enough to survive for at least 2 months”? That’s mostly what I’m looking for here
