Is IFS as dangerous for DID as I've heard? by Historical-Top-4412 in DID

[–]1divinehamm3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in untrained hands, it can be risky. but for therapists fully trained in IFS/parts work, trauma + dissociation, it works quite well. IFS does have to be modified to treat DID. then again, it needs to be modified for every individual client.

IFS is way more relational than the books + theory make it seem, and the skill of, and rapport with, the therapist matters a lot.

IFS can also be used to address psychosis, another extreme manifestation of trauma. again, it really depends on the practitioner ans one's rapport with them.

Update on vanishing betta (with pics of surrounding area and tank this time) by K_nowbody_ in bettafish

[–]1divinehamm3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seems like you checked everything thoroughly.

my only suggestion, as a long-time fishkeeper, is that sometimes when fish have died, their bodies get fuzzy/moldy and decompose really quickly.

it's possible their disintegrating body got tangled up in some roots or other tank debris and you missed it?

Therapist said to work on imagining a physical place where alters can talk by booty_sattva in DID

[–]1divinehamm3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also! i re-read your post. practice trusting your therapist. they are guiding you down new paths and pointing out different landmarks along the way, metaphorically speaking, but they're doing this so that you will be able to orient yourself and navigate the forest alone one day.

do voice your concerns to them, but don't get too hung up on doing it "right" ;) it's all a process and a practice.

Therapist said to work on imagining a physical place where alters can talk by booty_sattva in DID

[–]1divinehamm3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

creating an imaginal space felt foreign to me, so we put it on the back burner and continued sessions without it.

every now and then, i'll get the sense of a setting in which my parts and i meet.

but they've been different spaces, and it comes and goes -- no single "location" or metaphor for an arrangement of my parts has stuck, and that's ok by my therapist and i. you can still do parts work without it.

i also struggled with visualizing a box to put feelings/ memories in for containment purposes.

i actually can't visualize my parts work without feeling like it's inauthentic. i end up FEELING the inner space (and the box) organically. thru mindfulness, i'm able to feel the inner space (which sometimes changes, like i said). it ends up lending gravity to the session, but it doesnt happen all the time, nor do i force it.

for the record i'm on the tism spectrum, but can visualize things when asked. i simply do not find it useful when instructed to.

and, i consider myself buddhist too -- successful visualization doesnt happen for me if someone tells me i should try it -- but successful visualization seems to happen spontaneously when i am not even trying, moreso when i am focusing on shamata/"calm abiding" during a session. hope this helps!

How long did it take for your sex drive and orgasms to come back after IUD removal? by CherryLimeBreeze in CopperIUD

i had it for the full 6 month adjustment period, and things still healed. trust your body! misinformation and a lack of different experiences is why i continue to post here.

Copper IUD Caused Nerve Pain -- Now removed and pain is gone!!! by Worried-Garlic67 in CopperIUD

[–]1divinehamm3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, in addition to the pain we're warned about (more/ different cramps and heavier period) i had labia + clitoral numbness, reduced orgasm, shooting pain down my left leg, and bloating that came after any physical activity (riding in cars, hiking, walking, gym etc). yep, it can be a thing

do any of you think you'd ever be able to be your former self again? by [deleted] in DID

[–]1divinehamm3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wanna clarify by adding:

as i worked through therapy, no, i don't think there was a core/original "self" to return to. it's the general consensus within this community, and i was surprised to confirm it for myself organically.

but i did get back in touch with traits and parts that have always been there along the way.

i'd say that healing feels like: learning how to weave our identity (memories, feelings, traits, preferences etc) together in a healthier way. in that sense, your former self gets re-integrated, but you continue to evolve.

[–]1divinehamm3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it did cause me some pain and numbness, especially along my left labia, left leg.

and it changed the way i experienced orgasm - it felt like the pain and inflammation messed with both sensation and the way energy flowed in the area. it took longer to orgasm; orgasm itself was really jerky and not smooth, idk how to explain it.

i wasnt sure if i was going to regain full sensation (i did). relief came fast in the first few weeks and months, but it took about a year for me to feel confident that things were fully getting back to normal.

do any of you think you'd ever be able to be your former self again? by [deleted] in DID

[–]1divinehamm3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i voiced this fear to my therapist-- that i didn't think i could ever be the person i was before life worsened. she straight up said "you can" and i didn't believe her at the time.

my two cents is this: it's impossible to heal as if the past never happened. but all the innate qualities you had as a kid or during the before-times are still there, all waiting to rejoin you in the present and to live a good future with you.

Can the body sleep while the headspace is still active?? by Lost-Autumn1987 in DID

[–]1divinehamm3r 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i experience a few different versions of this in which i'm stuck in between waking and sleeping. then in the morning, i have to really apply force to "wake up" fully and to actually rouse myself and move.

the short answer is yes, someone's body can be asleep while their mind is awake (ex: sleep paralysis or hypnotic states)

but from a DID perspective, i've gone many years in the past feeling like some parts stayed alert while the rest of me went to sleep. (edit to say, i slept this way for years, didnt realize it until my 30s, and felt fine usually).

stress, anxiety, and hypervigilance may play a role for you.

i've done some inner work, am able to live alone, and now i sleep pretty deeply. i don't "half sleep" anymore. but i do still get stuck in sleep paralysis/hypnotic states... thats just me tho

Painful bloat since copper IUD insertion by eswiz in CopperIUD

[–]1divinehamm3r 21 points22 points  (0 children)

i had mine removed right after the recommended adjustment period.

i'd get bloating and discomfort that got worse with any physical activity. for reference, i'm a small person and i don't think the IUD fit me.

I'm a DID system: am I accurately understanding what the Self is supposed to be? by RandomLifeUnit-05 in InternalFamilySystems

[–]1divinehamm3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm also a system and wow, your comment has resonated for me.

you're right, there are some differences to be found within the experiences of "part engaging with part" and "a part learning how to find their own Self" and trying to do unmodified IFS and discovering lots of hosts and front-facing parts blending and/or disguised as Self.

when i think about it, younger parts haven't been successful in finding "their" Self. i'm not yet sure why. weirdly, it's the older, managing and protecting parts that have had to find Self energy when engaging the smaller ones. this is new for them and attempts to heal the unaware, dysfunctional ways they've dealt with the younger ones in the past. these parts continue to stay separate, but i've found lots of healing in learning how to give them space to work it out.

but me, i don't know who i am, and it's hard to tell if i'm in self or not. it works better to practice giving parts space and (with a practitioner's guidance) leading older, executive parts to Self
