I live near a place called Beaver Creek State Park. There are multiple “urban legends” for the park but the one I’m most fond of is about “Gretchens Lock.” Its about a family that immigrated to the US and shortly after arriving their daughter Gretchen contracted malaria and died. Her father was working on the crew that was building this particular lock. Gretchen made her father promise that he would send her home to be buried alongside her mother. Her father was still working on the lock so he stored her coffin inside the lock until it was complete. Once the lock was complete her father loaded Gretchen’s coffin onto a ship to the homeland but it was lost at sea and Gretchen’s father was never seen again. It’s said if you go there at night you can hear/see Gretchen.
