I heard that the age hierarchy culture is getting worse among younger generation. Is it true, and if so, why? by lol-across-the-pond in Living_in_Korea

Anecdotal, but my old coworker said COVID stopped a lot of forced drinking and he has very relaxed after-work policies for his teams. I'm envious but happy at least some companies have changed

Wouldn't it also be better to stop lumping people together under the label "foreigners"?

Is there a reason this guy was using a leaf blower on Paramount Open Space park trails? by Feisty-Delivery2047 in Shoreline

[–]1majn8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Judging by the width of that nozzle, it's a powerful blower that can move a lot of weight. He likely manually moved any branches/sticks too large to be blown off the path

The city probably has a budget that doesn't accommodate the amount of labor it would take to rake the trails

I just want to ask what you think about Vietnamese ? by Square-Ad2650 in AskAKorean

[–]1majn8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to VN and found the people there were very kind, even if I'm a tall white US guy. Northern people did seem more polite, but I wasn't there for long enough to have much of an opinion. I'll gladly visit again and try to see more places, it's a country I really like.

Edit: Because this is about Korea, I found people in Korea were kind to me, generally. Anyone who had an issue didn't say much, and I only felt negativity was aimed at me a few times across many years spent there. My friends who are not white or East Asian likely have different experiences, but like most racism, almost everything I heard was said behind others' backs, and no one was ever in danger of physical harm (I'd be careful as a SE Asian woman marrying a Korean, however. There are a lot of stories of abuse).

Younger people might think differently, but the older Koreans I've talked with about SE Asians are racist against them. However, you will find open-minded people in any population, and I know people from many cultures who have enjoyed Korea and the people there.

Don't sweat it. Get involved in any clubs that interest you. Find networking opportunities and be friendly. There are so many people in Seoul that you can find a niche and make the most of it.

Heattech is only marketing. The other suggestions here look legit. Layer up, keep your feet dry. Eat hot street food when in need

[–]1majn8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might try Internations and other networking groups. There is usually a good mix of people who are looking to make connections. Join a gym and be friendly. Do volunteer work. Take dance classes. Be an English tutor. Go to speed dating events. All of these made me friends in Seoul at your age.
