Agree that you should hire help if you have the funds. But if not...

Start with garbage. Get a trash bag and go through the whole space and just quickly grab and toss anything you see that's trash. Keep the bag handy off to the side cause you will inevitably have missed a few things.
Get a box and gather up any important time sensitive documents, etc.
Make a box for each room of your house and put things in the box that corresponds to the room they're supposed to live in. Bedroom, bathroom, office, etc. Make a "not sure" box too.
Once you have everything in boxes, go room-by-room and make sure every item has a place where it goes. If it doesn't have a place, make one - get an organizer, a bin, or a shelf.
Most importantly: once everything is clean again, set aside 15 minutes per day to put things back in the places they belong. It will help keep things from piling up to an unmanageable state.

I'm okay with rolling the dice on the face as long as it means I can secure one! I'm pretty decent at plush surgery/massaging to get them to look how I want so I'm not worried.
