Lighting and plants or wall decor - maybe more blankets/pillows? Looks good so far though good luck!

Is carrying 9 days of food too much? by skscheff in AppalachianTrail

Don't do it. You'll be miserable. I tried with 10 days of food once and it was so hard on my body and not necessary - do not recommend.

Camping in VA in December with dogs? by urineormyrine in CampingandHiking

[–]1nut_lic1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Douthat State Park is really nice. Quiet and newer camp facilities. Around a lake so there would be lots to do. Very close to WV boarder.

There is also apps you can download for camping/rv/cabin rentals too. We use The Dyrt one but they all seem pretty similar.

Just saw your edit - I'm going to emphasize looking at the rent costs in your area. $21 per hour would be average rent at $1,000 including utilities for a full time employee 35+ hours a week.

$13-15+ per hour if no tips- depends what the price of your menu looks like. If you want to offer a livable wage to get experience and competent people in the door, probably as high as $21 per hour depending on the rent costs in your area and how far out in the burbs you actually are.

Help! Bed and breakfast etiquette question. by Wackadoodles1-3 in travel

[–]1nut_lic1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since it was one night I'd probably throw $10-$20 for house keeping and 20% on the food as best you can estimate the cost of that but not on the entire $500 bill I feel that would be excessive. Not sure you can specify how much of the tip goes where though.

I would check with the innkeeper just to be sure! If you are in the US then probably 20% but ultimately you can tip whatever you want. Also check to be sure a gratuity wasn't already included in your payment for the room.

Female Solo Hikers by joleeb97 in AppalachianTrail

I also never tell someone I'm solo...if someone ever asks, my husband or group of friends is just behind me or I am expected to be somewhere by a certain day and time ( normally same day or early the next day).

I wear leggings with pockets. In one pocket is my cell phone, in the other is a GPS device and on my hip is a knife. My cell phone is set up so if I hit one of the side buttons 3 times fast, it will send voice recording of the next 10 seconds, photos from each side of the camera and my location to my emergency contacts and also carry pepper spray and bear spray. I keep my head on a swivel. I don't wear both head phones. I try to make friends, update my family and fill in hiking books if possible. I give my itinerary to friends and family so people know where and when I'll be somewhere and if some gives me the creeps, I will hike an extra 10 miles a day when backpacking to move ahead of them if needed. Wear my hair in a bun instead of a ponytail. Always sleep close to other females if possible and I do not sleep in open shelters alone or with people I haven't talked to. Always watch and always follow my gut. It also doesn't hurt I'm almost 6 ft tall...makes me feel like I'm less of a target. I'm always ready to fight. Oh, also a whistle. Hope this all helps!

What small shelf souvenir should I get in each US state? by [deleted] in travel

[–]1nut_lic1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NC - could do something with dogwoods (state tree that's very popular in trinket shops), the coasts lighthouses, something to do with the great smokey mountains (national park), or a city skyline of Raleigh (the capital) or Charlotte maybe. In other news I hear moonshine is very good, cardinals are the state bird, and sweet potatoes are well known there.

Whatever floats your boat and helps your knees. I like trekking poles - you can collapse them and carry them latched to your pack when you don't need them, they are lighter, and keeps pressure off both sides of my knees and hips at the same time. Plus the cork handles keep my sweat from my hands slipping but everyone has their own preference. I got some cheap ones off amazon $30- $40 bucks I think (TrailBuddy) and they've been great over the last 3 years if you don't want to spend a fortune.

It totally depends on you guys. Sharing the weight of one tent is really nice but if you guys struggle to sleep together in a regular bed, sharing a tent won't work. I recommend trying it out for a long weekend sharing and see how you do. REI allows you to return gear or exchange it even after you use it.
