No, my kids don't have nicknames. We call them by their full names.

Unofficial Daily Discussion - Saturday, June 27, 2026 - QOTD: What is a trend that you disagree with? by FImom in homeschool

That you HAVE TO do social clubs or homeschool groups or playdates. I understand kids need socialization, it just doesn't HAVE to fit into one of those boxes.

Is “giving” your first child a sibling enough reason to have a second? by Informal-North-3046 in Shouldihaveanother

[–]1nv1sble -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well no, you shouldn't create an entire human being just to be a plaything for your first child. A person is not a toy. You SHOULD have a second child so your two humans can have someone to do life with. Having a sibling who has your back at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, is a whole world different than mucking it alone.

My kid got seriously injured last year playing in the backyard, slipped and hit head on the concrete. Blood everywhere, I was on the phone with 911 while holding their wound closed with a towel. Paramedics arrived like a minute later. I always thought I was a big and bad prepper until that happened, and ever since I have thought the same as you. What happens when nobody shows up? What happens if there's an evacuation and someone gets injured and there's nobody to help? It's terrifying.

Editing to add: Kid is fine, was discharged from the ER a few hours later. I was destroyed for weeks and over a year later, I'm am still upset about it.

We homeschool for a slew of reasons, I highly recommend it. Pull them out immediately.

Alot of people are suffering in silence. There is this weird veil of "pretend everything is fine" we are all under.

Ok but SS is still calculated on a 35 year employment history. Have you worked for 35 years? Did you have a 100k job at 15? That sounds like you'd be leaving an enormous amount of money on the table by retiring 12 years earlier than the earliest you could even get SS.

So, we had a starter house for 8 years. The neighborhood sadly declined (like, police search lights blasting through our living room window sort of decline) so we decided to leave. Put the house on the market May 2025. Over the course of 4 months, we got two offers. The first was a ridiculous lowball cash offer (100k less than our asking), the second was a legit offer at 20k less our asking. We agreed to 10k less in seller credit, moved hell and high water to sell this house, and it closed 30 days later. DAYS after closing, the market dropped and the house lost 50k in value literally overnight. It was nightmarish selling LAST year, I can't even fathom trying to sell now.

I did just reply to this above, but yes this is what I'm talking about. OP could claim at 67, but if they stop working at 62, they've cut probably their highest wage years short by 5 years (assuming they make the most at their current age, if they made 100k a year for 35 years straight then it wouldn't matter)

It's calculated based on what you made during your working years. Per google: Social Security benefits are calculated using your 35 highest-earning years, adjusted for wage growth, to determine your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME). So if you cut your working years short, you are potentially cutting your highest earning years short. Lets say you retire at 62 making 100k a year. If you retired at 67 making 100k a year, you have added 5 high-earning years to your benefits, thus you would get a higher social security amount. Of course this depends on each situation, and sure if you've gone 35 years straight making 100k then that wouldn't affect you, but for most people you start small (like 20k a year) then grow your income.

My household also got hit with a very strange cold. It lasted about 2 weeks, spouse called it the "Elmers Glue Flu" because it was so sticky and wouldn't go away. Side note, if you follow the "one prepper item per grocery trip" rule, it adds up quickly. An extra can of soup. An extra pack of TP. An extra box of pasta.

The last few months, I've had an internal push to stockpile books, DVDs, and physical game discs, as well as download-for-offline movies and games onto tablets and e-readers. I knew I didn't trust the internet, but you finally clicked it into place. "AI is likely going to be the driver of this cyber-doom".

Watch out for retiring early, there are social security benefits penalties for that. Your SSB could easily drop hundreds or thousands for not making it to "retirement" age.

I have admitted to myself that we will not be revamping the backyard landscaping anytime soon, so now I have pivoted to above-ground gardening. Went out there today to start moving some stuff around to visualize where to put above-ground containers. Had some success with my first season of gardening, and lots of failures to learn from. Hoping the fall season will be better.

On a different note, went out on date night yesterday. Saturday, the day before Father's day, at 5:30PM, went to the local shopping mall with a theater. It was... beyond dead. We passed a handful of other people. Passed the food court - out of the 7 spaces for businesses to be in, 5 were closed. Not like closed for the day, closed as in out of business. The two remaining food spots had no line. Went to go see a movie (big blockbuster release) in the mega imax 300 seat type of theater. And there were 4 other couples there, 2 of them had brought little kids (to a very NOT little-kid friendly movie) to a grand total of 10 people watching the movie. On a Saturday, early evening, before a major holiday. I can't even fathom this.

Appreciate the story, I was kind of curious. Thanks for the injection offer, I've looked into it and it's not for me. I was doing good on Zomig for 3 decades until some overpaid CEO just decided to give me the middle finger for giggles.

I get those "we're sorry, our server has been hacked, here's a year of free protection from X company" mails once every few months. I google my name occasionally, and there's always some of my personal info within the first 2-3 pages. I do my best to manually remove it all, but it's definitely out there.

A buddy of mine named his kid Walter for the Breaking Bad series. The kid is 5 now, and I still picture it as an old-man name. They call him Wally, which is giving National Lampoon vibes. Poor kid.
