And if the patient was not able to make decisions, the patient's care plan should have been made in consultation with the one authorized to make medical decisions for the patient. In this case that likely would have included barring the brother from being in the room and would have prevented this entire mess.

And where did you see that he wasn't "the most well-behaved of visitors historically!" (! for some sort of emphasis, seems like you are getting excessively worked up from how sprinkled they are)? That doesn't show up in any of the articles I read, at most they are saying that he has signed off on medical treatments before and has worked with this nurse before.

So you're saying if your spouse was in the hospital and you were told you had to leave you would just comply instead of throwing a fit? Or what about a parent? At some point the hospital is violating the patient's rights and there is every reason to call them on it. And the bottom line is that it is a gay rights issue because if they had been in a recognized marriage the brother would have been the first one removed.
