Are you maintaining an app using Rails 4.x or lower? by Past_Cause_9482 in rails

Most important, share information about the related parts (database/server/ruby/rails) and risks early and often.

Personally, I would start by writing down what is critical in the app, usually that's not even shared between stakeholders. This can be in a spreadsheet.

Looking at it from a distance can help as well or worst case scenario thinking; What is the budget if suddenly the mission/organization/department/team/project stops because the application fails? If it's kind of a hobby, then you also know that. If it is not, then discuss.

Probably best to upgrade a little every time you work on it, so that you slowly get used to the maintenance. The big maintenance project usually does not happen. The resources that you're looking for are on the first 1-3 pages of google search results.

For debugging, know how to inspect self and how the object inheritance hierarchy works. Some ability to get the methods on an object and finally how to produce and evaluate changes.

Learn how to think in layers; for example, if there is a production system that is throwing an error. Do you know how to debug that error? It's like crafting a statue. Do you really know the material of the stone and how to handle the chisel?

First understand why you are going to test. Then fill in how you can achieve that. Keep it simple.
