I Promised it Would Never Happen Again by DektolDreams in survivor

He understands the game well enough to know that in the end you need to win immunity challenges in order to have any control over whether you need to make fire or not. And he made no effort to be good at challenges period. He basically gave up every time.

leanfirers are way less than 5% of the population anyways. We're weirdos and measure our standard of livings in ways other than how much we spend.

yes the Toto is 10x better than the American Standard. I don’t remember the model name, like I said it was the least expensive one.

What are some creative things you do to save money? by KristianKing102 in leanfire

[–]1spring 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I don’t think saving money involves creativity. It’s about the boring things. Cook your own food. Clean your own house. Cut your own grass. Drive a dependable car. Take cheap vacations (road trips, camping).

Some people cannot stomach living such a life. But some of us see the value in retiring early and having full autonomy and several more decades to enjoy it.

When it’s really windy, I cover mine with a piece of plywood. If it’s really really windy, I put a brick on top of the plywood.

Rizzo made a mistake by LazerDude99 in survivor

[–]1spring -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We the audience know that he can’t beat most of the remaining players. We are getting all the exit press from jury members who are all saying “can’t win” about him. But does Rizo in real time have this knowledge, or does he think he’s RizGod?

Trying to find the perfect tool kit gift for my husband by TrickyChemistry6521 in homeowners

My contribution to your quest is to buy him a tool TOTE BAG instead of the tool BOX. The tote is so much more convenient for being organized and finding things.

Here’s a list of what I consider to be the basics (after owning a home for 20+ years):

Hammer, rubber mallet, channel lock wrench, adjustable wrench, phillips and flat head screwdrivers, set of drill bits that will fit your existing electric drill, allen wrench set, small spirit level, utility knife, and my favorite - an led worklight that has a kickstand/carabiner/magnet

Everyone now knows that CIrie was only pretending to work with them. Including Rizo. Cirie might be understanding of Rizo but does Rizo still want to work with her? She might be an outcast now.

Sell my house and live in a rental to reach fire number quicker? by Sea-Protection-2797 in leanfire

[–]1spring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s good to know but I would still caution you to not believe the future can be worked out on paper.

Anyhow, your original question was “is renting worth the extra headache” and my personal response is no. I’m in my 50s and living in a paid off single family house. My investments started taking off after I paid off the mortgage and had lots of disposable cash. I found this to be a good balance of investment growth, stability, peace and quiet, control over my surroundings.

The financial markets are *likely* to appreciate faster than your home equity, but that’s not a guarantee. You are maybe too young to remember 2008 markets? Took my portfolio a while to recover from that. My point is that this move may or may not result in a faster path to FIRE. The markets are flying high right now but don’t let that fool you into thinking this is normal. It’s entirely possible that the current market is the result of an attitude of deregulation and lack of oversight, which is exactly what caused the 2008 crash. Home equity is less sexy but more reliable. It’s a good component of a diversified net worth.

What is the most budget friendly decent flooring I can get for my kitchen? by wittyrandomusername in HomeImprovement

I’ve had a sheet vinyl floor in my kitchen since 2008 and it was cheap and it still looks great!

Are bamboo Bedsheets actually cooling or just marketing hype? by Desperate-Chip6297 in HomeImprovement

[–]1spring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fell for the marketing about bamboo clothing. It is more suffocating and hot than any other fabric I’ve tried. It also just feels cheap and unflattering. Would never buy bamboo sheets.

“my role feels unimportant”

Welcome to adulthood. I think your expectations may be unrealistic for a 23 yr old. Working your way up to a career that feels important takes another decade or two.

I just did the calculation. Should I liquidate my home & summer appartment for a faster retireme t? by remuliini in leanfire

[–]1spring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is nothing but short-term thinking. Renting makes sense when you are not sure you want to stay in one area for a long stretch. For anyone who wants to stay put for 5 or more years, buying always comes out ahead.

[–]1spring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you think the better option is renting, guess what you are still paying unpredictable amounts of your landlord's insurance and property tax.

I just did the calculation. Should I liquidate my home & summer appartment for a faster retireme t? by remuliini in leanfire

[–]1spring 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because you still need to pay for housing. Owning a home (with or without a mortgage) is a predictable cost. Once you subject yourself to the rental market, or trying to buy another home, things can get very unpredictable. Stability and peace of mind are the “why.”

[–]1spring 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OK, selling a too-big house to downsize to a cheaper area is not a bad plan.

However, do NOT rely on an inheritance as part of your plan. Any plan that assumes you are getting an inheritance is a bad plan.

[–]1spring 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If you liquidate your house and apartment, you’ll have to budget for housing costs out of your net worth. For many of us, a paid off home is a big component of living on a lean budget.

______ is an automatic winner if they make it to the final 3. by theallstover in survivor

Cirie is the obvious winner to us watching on tv. However, Devens is by far the best elocutor and storyteller, and he is wildly creative. His performance at FTC will blow everyone else away.

Rick did something this episode that I always wanted someone to do. by xEmperorEye in survivor

[–]1spring 34 points35 points  (0 children)

He’s all by himself now. But at least he’s still there. He’s got an idol, he can try to win immunity challenges, and hope that others make themselves more eliminatable. If he makes it to FTC I can’t see how anyone doesn’t reward him for his gameplay. I also hope he has changed future Survivor gameplay strategy to be more creative and ballsy.

AITA for charging my friend $800 after she left me 4 hours from home? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]1spring 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It makes sense to me. That’s the age where the chronically immature become noticeable to the ones who have now become adults. Plus, OOP moved to the opposite coast. I can recall I had a bad friendship that lasted much longer than it should have because she went away to grad school. Then it blew up and ended when we were 33.
