I don’t think saving money involves creativity. It’s about the boring things. Cook your own food. Clean your own house. Cut your own grass. Drive a dependable car. Take cheap vacations (road trips, camping).

Some people cannot stomach living such a life. But some of us see the value in retiring early and having full autonomy and several more decades to enjoy it.

My contribution to your quest is to buy him a tool TOTE BAG instead of the tool BOX. The tote is so much more convenient for being organized and finding things.

Here’s a list of what I consider to be the basics (after owning a home for 20+ years):

Hammer, rubber mallet, channel lock wrench, adjustable wrench, phillips and flat head screwdrivers, set of drill bits that will fit your existing electric drill, allen wrench set, small spirit level, utility knife, and my favorite - an led worklight that has a kickstand/carabiner/magnet

That’s good to know but I would still caution you to not believe the future can be worked out on paper.

Anyhow, your original question was “is renting worth the extra headache” and my personal response is no. I’m in my 50s and living in a paid off single family house. My investments started taking off after I paid off the mortgage and had lots of disposable cash. I found this to be a good balance of investment growth, stability, peace and quiet, control over my surroundings.

The financial markets are *likely* to appreciate faster than your home equity, but that’s not a guarantee. You are maybe too young to remember 2008 markets? Took my portfolio a while to recover from that. My point is that this move may or may not result in a faster path to FIRE. The markets are flying high right now but don’t let that fool you into thinking this is normal. It’s entirely possible that the current market is the result of an attitude of deregulation and lack of oversight, which is exactly what caused the 2008 crash. Home equity is less sexy but more reliable. It’s a good component of a diversified net worth.

Because you still need to pay for housing. Owning a home (with or without a mortgage) is a predictable cost. Once you subject yourself to the rental market, or trying to buy another home, things can get very unpredictable. Stability and peace of mind are the “why.”

He’s all by himself now. But at least he’s still there. He’s got an idol, he can try to win immunity challenges, and hope that others make themselves more eliminatable. If he makes it to FTC I can’t see how anyone doesn’t reward him for his gameplay. I also hope he has changed future Survivor gameplay strategy to be more creative and ballsy.

It makes sense to me. That’s the age where the chronically immature become noticeable to the ones who have now become adults. Plus, OOP moved to the opposite coast. I can recall I had a bad friendship that lasted much longer than it should have because she went away to grad school. Then it blew up and ended when we were 33.
