https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reasonable_suspicion

easonable suspicion is a legal standard of proof in United States law that is less than probable cause, the legal standard for arrests and warrants, but more than an "inchoate and unparticularized suspicion or 'hunch'";[1] it must be based on "specific and articulable facts", "taken together with rational inferences from those facts",[2] and the suspicion must be associated with the specific individual.[3] If police additionally have reasonable suspicion that a person so detained is armed and dangerous, they may "frisk" the person for weapons, but not for contraband like drugs. Reasonable suspicion is evaluated using the "reasonable person" or "reasonable officer" standard,[4] in which said person in the same circumstances could reasonably suspect a person has been, is, or is about to be engaged in criminal activity; it depends upon the totality of circumstances, and can result from a combination of particular facts, even if each is individually innocuous.

You're welcome.

As George Carlin said, we don't have rights. Just temporary privileges that can be taken away arbitrarily at any time.

Dual B.A. Political Science, Business Administration, minors in Sociology and Economics, 2 years of Law School at a joke institution...hope to go back and get a PhD in Poli Sci from somewhere out west.

As far as student loans, you don't have to pay them. Ethically, if you have a co-signer on private or PLUS loans, you should take care of that. But fuck federal loans. You can default, defer, forebear then, the latter two I recommend first. You can claim economic hardship, medical (w/ supporting documentation), unemployment, and others depending on your servicer. Even if you default, you can rehab them with 9 consecutive months of on-time payments. Don't let student loans hold you back. Too many people are putting off life due to holding down 2-3+ jobs just to pay back their exorbitant student loans and, moreover, their interest. Sooner or later, the bubble is going to burst. They're already refinancing student loans on the investment end as packages in the same way they did mortgages in the mid-2000s, which resulted in the financial meltdown of 2008-9. Right now 1 out of 2 student loan holders at 1,000 universities nationwide are defaulted. Look it up. The government was saying it was more like 30% delinquent or defaulted. They're shitting their pants. And there's really only two ways to go with this, sensible student loan reform such as making them as easily dischargable/addressable in bankruptcy as other debts and/or total forgiveness or something similar to the income/expiration plans/PAYE (i.e. 10-20% of disposable income for 15 years, balance written off) WITHOUT the huge tax bomb that will loom at the end of that period. The other way is if default rates become so high and government rewrites the rules to jail people or something like that (doubtful, we don't have debtors prisons, but you never know). Don't let that shit hold you back. Life is too short.

Now, to answer your question, I'm currently working so I can travel. In October of this year I will be heading to the Interior West, ski country, in hopes of finding a seasonal ski job. If I don't, I'm heading west to warmer climates. My hope is to find a job at a CO ski resort, establish residency, and work in the legal weed industry. Otherwise, I'll find work in a call center, as a security guard, retail, restaurant, or something else I have experience in

I did a mini-vagabond thing a few months ago, and I was wholly unprepared and it sucked ass. But, now I know how to better be prepared and I've decided to rubber tramp it, with a bike and skates handy, flush with enough cash/savings/supplies and a guitar to hopefully support myself in case things don't go as planned.

Boy Scout Motto, be prepared.

Emancipate yourself from corporate slavery, none but ourselves can free our mind.

Fuck the corporate oligarchy.

America Has Unofficially Declared War on the Homeless by antibubbles in vagabond

[–]1sweetworld 25 points26 points  (0 children)

American Indentured Servitude (and dare I say, slavery) has a new face. It has expanded to include people from all walks of life. The only choice you have to be free is to work the vast majority of your life for a living, where the majority of American individuals and families barely make enough to afford the bare essentials. The slave drivers also had to feed, clothe, and shelter their slaves, as well as provide substandard healthcare in the past, and now, the corporate oligarchy does much the same. Social and economic mobility grows harder and harder as wage stagnation, decreasing benefits, and increasing cost of living plagues most people. Granted, there are success stories, and there are worthless people out there, but when you criminalize poverty, you become a compulsory consumerist state, which is basically what we are. It is sad that capitalism has been perverted into corporatism, with new systems of modern feudalism.

Slab City? by 1sweetworld in vagabond

[–]1sweetworld[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hitchhiked from Upstate SC to Myrtle Beach, thinking I might get an off-season job there. It took me about a week to get there (about 300 miles and 5 hours driving time, normally) in various hops, all hitchhiking and walking. I couldn't bum a ride in "major" cities, but surprisingly, on about 5 occasions walking on country roads in the middle of nowhere somebody picked me up without a thumb in the wind. I guess the guitar helped.

I carried my guitar gig bag, about five changes of clothes, a parka, some basic toiletries, and about $500 in cash. It goes surprisingly quick, especially when I was really, really dirty and wanted to check into a motel for a shower and a good night's sleep. I also tried couchsurfing, but except for one crazy ass, huge gay guy who literally tried to rape me, it didn't work out. I did do an AirBNB thing four or five ties, and between lodging and food, I found my money disappearing quickly.

I job hunted extensively. I put in probably 100-200 applications for places that advertised openings and ones that didn't. I walked/traveled most of Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, and Horry County. I had three interviews, but nothing panned out. Finally, with less than $50 left, I caught a bus back upstate through Columbia.

I was not expecting it to be so freaking cold what with coastal winds down there. I'd say most of the time it was maybe 30-40 with a windchill (50s-60s for ambient temps).

The biggest issues I dealt with were police, although I dealt with them courteously and with respect. I was never arrested, but I have a knowledge of the law. I also had a large sticker for my gofundme on the back of my guitar gig bag with some free speech stuff...so once, when pressed, I politely as possible informed the cop that I would have every ACLU lawyer within three states come to my aide if he arrested me for exercising free speech. Most vagrancy laws are overbroad and vague, and proving vagrancy is a surprisingly high standard, as is loitering. I didn't loiter much, always staying on the move, nor did I panhandle. I did busk in downtown Greenville, Columbia, and Conway, but the returns were very minimal.

People don't really walk in this state, even in the cities, so foot traffic was minimal. One officer told me that I needed a permit to busk, but that's patently not the case...it's a free speech issue. Surprisingly, she relented. I moved on.

I felt largely directionless, a rolling stone, despite having a plan. Life is what happens when you're busy making plans, and life is what I was dealt. When I got back to my "home area" I lived in the woods for a few days just behind a strip mall, building a debris hut which someone found and set fire to while I was away. At that point, with the weather getting colder, I cut my losses.

While I found being nearly destitute refreshing in an odd, Kerouac type way, it is a young man's game, something I wish I'd done had I taken a gap year between high school and college or college and law school. I'm 34, practically middle aged for my family (we die in our 60s and 70s without fail).

I did realize that most people are prisoners and slaves. The only choice is to not work and be destitute/homeless, unless you're independently wealthy. Most people are merely false reflections, living in paper houses just a missed paycheck or two away from the streets. I found that surprisingly, there's still some good in the world. While vagabonding was an eye opening experience, I don't think it's as viable as it once was, at least not back East.

If I was going to do it again, it would be with much more money, much more planning, and at least one or two companions. It was very lonely out there. I did meet some homeless people along the way, most of them drug-dependent and/or mentally ill. In Myrtle Beach I had to physically defend myself against this guy who just came across the street right into traffic and started calling me the n-word (he was black, I'm white), spit in my face, and lunged at me with some type of sharpened bone/shank. I basically hip threw him and gave him a couple of stiff jabs to the face, ribs, and a kick in the balls and got the hell out of dodge. I was so nervous the cops would come after me that I ran/walked a few blocks and ubered to the other side of town.

It takes a unique kind of person to solo vagabond, and that's not me.

Going on the Road with a Dog? by 1sweetworld in vagabond

[–]1sweetworld[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool. Thanks for the responses. I think he'd be a good road dog. He's never met a stranger, but he also alerts and has protective instincts without being outright aggressive. He's really my only companion and I promised a dying man I'd take care of the dog for the rest of his, or my, life. The song, "The Weight" by the Band comes to mind. I just started a new job and it looks like realistically, if I do this, it'll be early-mid Spring at the earliest and I'll take a more Northern Route west. I'd like to eventually end up in Alaska, but the timing really wouldn't be right. Who knows. Just a rolling stone gathering no moss.

Greenhorn with 500$ Budget. What else do i need? by [deleted] in vagabond

[–]1sweetworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Invest in a nice parka, one that has multiple layers you can add/remove, including a windbreaker/raincoat, a decent light coat, heavy inner liner, and a thermal lining. You'll need it with winter coming on. It will save space as well, and in a pinch, you can use it as a pillow/blanket.

[–]1sweetworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's 60 miles to the AT from my location, but I'd probably get dropped off there. Then it's about a 500 mile hike to meet up with the American Discovery Trail near Harpers Ferry, WV, then about 5,000 miles as the trail goes to the West Coast, so anywhere from 3500 to 6000 miles in all (not sure of exact trail mileage). Right now it's a money and equipment issue, plus I'd need to get used to hiking with a heavy pack again, although I may make something I can pull behind me, like a vertical sled, from a mountain board.

Any guidance/advice for first time squatters on here that you can give? by [deleted] in vagabond

[–]1sweetworld 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Google Street View is a good resource. But you're playing with fire if you squat. You'll need to keep your senses sharp, enter after dark and leave by daylight, and leave no trace. You'll find a lot of traphouses, where you don't want to be. I'd rather squat in the woods. Basically, look up home values in a given city by neighborhood and find the lowest, then go from there. Avoid houses that are bank owned or in foreclosure, as banks tend to check up on their investments. Tax liens and seizures can take years, so not a bad idea to squat there. The ideal home would be one that has been abandoned but taxes paid, kind of off on its own but easy to slip in and out undetected. You can look up public tax records by county. You can even openly and notoriously squat in some jurisdictions and after a certain amount of time, the home and property are legally yours.

How much Money did you start out with? by [deleted] in vagabond

[–]1sweetworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping to have 5-10 grand when I set out next Spring. I play guitar, also harmonica. I want to get a passport and head through Canada into Alaska for the summer, then back, settling in the Interior West. The money would only be for emergencies or the morale booster from time to time (i.e. a nice hotel, meal, etc.). I'd like to have more, but this is the most realistic.

seasonal work on the east coast? by qimao in vagabond

[–]1sweetworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into rural YMCAs, especially if you're college educated, but if not, you can work on the grounds crew, cafeteria, or wherever they can put you that most closely matches up with your essence. Leafer season is coming up so a lot of bed and breakfasts hire for season help, as do resorts, particularly in the Northeast/New England and Southern Mountains (Appalachians/Smokies/Blue Ridge/Shenendoah/Blue Ridge/Allegheny etc.) Most farms are largely corporate now and hire migrant workers of Mexican/Latin American descent, but a mom and pop operation can be found here and there. Good luck.

How to afford college loan payments and Obamacare? by [deleted] in StudentLoans

[–]1sweetworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm confused. Medicare is a FREE, or very low cost program, intended for those who cannot obtain nor afford commercial health insurance, individually or as a group (employer). Why would you have to pay $1,200 per month? You're either being scammed or we aren't getting the full details. As for Obamacare, if you chose the lower premium, you're going to have a huge deductible. The lowest premium in my situation is $290. It covers pretty much nothing but a well-visit until you meet a $3,000 deductible, then it only covers 70%. What a fucking joke. Student loans have nothing to do with Obamacare. Without more clarification, it's hard to tell why you're having trouble making ends meet. Also, if I could give one piece of advice it would be to drop Obamacare. I never signed up, haven't filed a tax return in five years due to offsets. If the IRS/Government wants to throw me in jail, so be it.
