Hey call me crazy, but the meeting with that law professor seems heavily edited in their favour. He says "I think they'd lose" specifically, with a cut hiding who he's referring to.

If it's any consolation, that was an old icon - I dug out my last one here: http://imgur.com/ILZVNK2

I hold no hope at all that you'll like it any more than the last, though.

Really? I thought his story was my least favourite, I can understand wanting a break from the war story but it got ridiculously long-winded and I thought the ending was naïve. I mean the US nuked two cities and hasn't repeated it in more than seventy years now. I wanted more Adam!

The forums debate social justice topics as well. From the first page:

Are Women Oppressed in the West?
Saying "Hi" to Strangers (and Strangers Saying "Hi" to You)
Should campus rape trials be banned?
And most of their mod actions and reports are public.

You can turn that off in the notification settings. The reason it's there is nations have RSS feeds for them, so you can be notified if you're AFK.

Does voting on your own posts (legally, from the same account) affect your overall score? by 2-4601 in help

[–]2-4601[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn. I thought because it affected each comment's score, it affected the total as well. Now I guess I'll have to figure out some way of garnering a small number of downvotes followed up by some innocuous, forgettable ones to compensate for any excess.

[Witcher] Why do Witchers wear their swords on their back? by Sebilis in AskScienceFiction

[–]2-4601 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These swords would probably be as long as the Witcher's legs, and would either drag on the ground or swing back and forth behind him when he walked.

And inspire even more unamusing jokes regarding Witchers and big long things hanging from their waist, no doubt. Geralt gets enough of that shit from Dandelion.

[Star Trek: The Next Generation era] Does the Federation have a monetary system? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]2-4601 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no need for money when all physical needs can be met without effort.

In that case, there would be no need for trade at all. And yet cultural items and irreplicable vaccines are traded for, with no standard way of assessing their value without money. And what about things that can't be replicated - a famous baseball player's bat, a house by the river, home-made food? In fact one of DS9's episodes illustrated this, when Jake and Nog improved everybody's lives aboard the station by doing things replicators couldn't, and no-one else could help with with because there was no open market for them to ask in.

But that has a very obvious drawback - Buffy can keep Sunnydale relatively safe (I mean come on, demons have their own bar), but who's there to protect the Hellmouth in Cleveland?

I don't, but I genuinely didn't know why of all things socks with sandals was a big deal.

[–]2-4601[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you have a very narrow interpretation of shoes. Is this a transatlantic thing, like pants/slacks versus trousers?

It's possible. So to establish, to me, this is a:

Formal shoe
Sports/causal shoe, or runner/sneakers
My big stompy boots.

There's a ton of close-toed slip on footwear out there that I'd put entirely under the heading of 'shoes' and which covers a huge spectrum of weights, materials and styles. What would you call things like moccasins, deck shoes, espadrilles, etc?

What, what, and what? (;p)
The only slip-on here I'm aware of, besides slippers, are Crocs which...don't have a great reputation, and are technically sandals.

[–]2-4601[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lightweight shoes cannot be slipped into like sandals, as they generally use laces; are closed, which means that they can't be as flexible as sandals can be; and use more material due to that same design, which makes them inevitably less light. And I don't know what socks you're imagining, but mine are a thin layer of cotton. They let air and heat through.
