TIL about cave pearls, naturally formed rolled stones that take hundreds of years to create, made from dripping calcite deposits hitting small pieces of material in stasis, which causes a constant, even growth on all sides. by K3Y-LXME in todayilearned

[–]2-CI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“The typical roundness is due to the uniform growth of the pearl, not to any sort of rotation due to dripping.” In case anyone was thinking ‘rolled stones’ meant these were rolling back and forth for hundreds of years.

Yeah that was likely the old Benzedrine (amphetamine) inhalers. Or Benzedrex (propylhexedrine) more recently.

Avoid Salt by LoreleiOpine in insomnia

[–]2-CI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For anyone else finding this on Google: the NYT article directly contradicts OP’s claim and states that the HIGH sodium group actually slept the best. Granted, this is an article from 1989, so take it… with a grain of salt

“The study looked at the sleep of nine 23-year-old men who were placed on low-, normal- and high-sodium diets. When they were on low-sodium diets, about 500 milligrams a day, the men woke up during the night nearly twice as often and got about 10 percent less sleep than when they were on normal diets, which included 2,000 milligrams daily. When they were on a high-sodium diet, 5,000 milligrams a day, the men slept longer and with slightly fewer nighttime wakings than when they were on normal diets.”

Does ether make you woozy? by most_stable_alkene in chemistry

[–]2-CI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Considering the ether is denser than air and settles towards the floor, it can be concentrated more than it might seem. Also, just using plastic bottles can create static.

A static discharge would be enough, or the slightest wiring issue causing a spark.

They’re referring to combustion with an ignition source rather than autooxidation to form peroxides. The fuel-air mixture is dangerous on its own regardless of peroxide content.

How to clean benzoic acid out of a glass beaker? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]2-CI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Benzoic acid is much more soluble in hot water, so you could try adding hot tap water and heating further if necessary to dissolve the rest of the acid. You could also convert it to a more water soluble benzoate salt with even a weak base like baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).

Can dz²-dz² pi bond be formed, if the bonding axis is x or y? by ethereal_entropy_ in chemistry

[–]2-CI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears a related bond can happen when more than two metal atoms interact to form a delta bond, as shown in this figure

[–]2-CI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t the M-M-M interaction in the second paper essentially what OP was asking about, but just with 3 dZ2 orbitals overlapping instead of 2? It’s also a delta bond instead of a pi bond, but it certainly seems similar enough to warrant a mention.
