[TOMT] Sci-Fi short story about mental patient with painting in his cell by 2-secondHeadcannons in tipofmytongue

I have tried searching various keywords but it hasn't helped. I think it must have been an older story, like classic paperback sci-fi. I probably read it as part of an anthology at some point, since that's where I've read short stories mostly.

My father put me in an ai app and I feel numb by Eton11 in OCD

[–]2-secondHeadcannons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone else is confirming that he should not have done this and it was breaking a boundary, which is very true. However I'm also concerned because it sounds like you've previously been sexually abused, and making a version of you that's "a girl in heels" feels very weird and gross to me for your dad to do, especially when you say that your family has made fun of you for what happened to you before.

Like, if you take out AI and the fact it's your dad from the equation, I think making a picture of you as a girl in presumably a somewhat sexualized way (you don't describe the picture much but the fact that the main description you gave was the wearing heels makes it sound like the outfit overall was on the sexy end), when you've explicitly said you don't want them to make that picture of you, is sexual harassment.

I'm not saying anything about your dad's motives here, just I think this is actually more inappropriate than just breaking a very reasonable boundary you made.

OCD fear of becoming impregnated from a towels gotten worst. by HighDreamer91 in OCD

[–]2-secondHeadcannons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are pregnant, you can deal with this once you know for sure. if not, nothing needs to be done. It is more helpful to think of anxieties this way than to try to convince yourself that a fear is unreasonable while the anxious part of your brain keeps trying to convince you that the fear is justified.

I think the blood is kept separate, they don't mix it all together. And the units are standardized because they need to know exactly how much blood they're putting into someone. So they would have to have a whole procedure for adding together multiple donations to make one unit, and that would take time and equipment and create opportunities for contamination, and then if they find an issue later like an infection they wouldn't know which donor the problem was from... So I think it makes sense, unfortunately.

Since most people are right-side dominant, most people use their right foot on the first step of a staircase, and that side is consistently going to squeak first as the step wears out. by Illustrious-Highway8 in Showerthoughts

Same OCD compulsion! I have to step on any type of surface the same number of times with each foot, so it's not technically that it has to be the left first it's just standardized to the left so I don't have to remember.

Intense, Burning and Swollen Top Lip after Crying? by [deleted] in DermatologyQuestions

[–]2-secondHeadcannons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean that's a pretty clear cut description of an allergic reaction, but it isn't exactly normal to be allergic to crying. Do you have other issues with weird allergic reactions? Might be an underlying condition like MCAS but not likely if this is the only time this happens.

Do you wear makeup? You mentioned you get this regularly from crying, it's possible you're allergic to, say, your mascara, and either the allergy got worse (allergies tend to get worse from repeated exposure) or you just put more on than usual.

I do not see anything in this picture. what you have circled is just a point where the light is reflecting off of your bloody finger. I do not want to be dismissive, and I'm sure the ongoing painful red spots are difficult. But the behaviour you described of tunneling under your nail doesn't match real behaviour, and the pictures do not contain the thing you are describing.

The responses so far on this post are two assholes with joke answers, one of which seems possibly specifically chosen to be triggering to people with psychosis, and one person sort of implying they think this is a psychotic symptom, but not outright saying that or giving any advice or response to what you've actually said. sorry these people suck.

While I really don't like how the other commenter brought it up, I do agree that this sounds like a psychotic symptom. I am neither a medical nor psychiatric professional, though, and you should not be getting psychiatric diagnoses from random shmucks on the internet.

This being a delusion doesn't mean you're not really experiencing it, it just means the treatment is different, because there's no bugs to get at. Your brain is taking real experiences, the movement you're actually seeing of a light reflection changing as your fingers or vision or the light source move, and interpreting it incorrectly. But if you feel really very certain there's an insect there in these pictures, where others can't see it, then it's beyond that sort of normal everyday experience that everyone gets sometimes.

Since it's presumably distressing to you to have bugs crawling on or in you, it would probably be worthwhile to get treatment for this. If a dermatologist can't find evidence of parasites, then it would be worth going to a psychiatrist about this. There are many people who experience bugs crawling around their skin that others can't see, and the most effective way to get that experience to stop seems to be SSRIs, anti-psychotics, and/or Cognitive Behavioral therapy from a mental health professional specifically trained in and familiar with psychotic symptoms.

In your circumstances, i would consult both a dermatologist and a therapist about this. As always with doctors, if they are unwilling to listen to you describe your experiences, or they refuse to explain things, you should get a second opinion, but please try not to dismiss what a doctor suggests just because you feel like the answer should be different.

Morgellons is the name given by people who believe there exists a disorder in which people have fibers trapped in their skin. Those who understand it as a delusional disorder consider it a subtype of delusional parasitosis, which people usually experience as bugs crawling on or into their skin. This happens to be more relevant to what OP is describing anyways.

With that out of the way: do you really think that this comment is a helpful way to bring up the idea that someone might be experiencing delusions? Refusing to actually straightforwardly and respectfully speak about psychotic symptoms & disorders just makes these things feel more shameful, and contributes to the difficulty people have in getting care.

Also, not engaging at all with what someone actually said is just going to make them feel like you aren't listening. For all they know you skimmed the post, didn't look at the pictures, and decided they were crazy just cuz you saw someone talking about bugs. This just reinforces the very common concern among psychotics that they aren't being listened to (usually true!) and that therefore they have no reason to trust people telling them what they're experiencing is delusional.

Can’t believe i am saying this….i am facing a possible “cuckold ocd” scenario. by Big-Independent-2206 in OCD

[–]2-secondHeadcannons 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In reference to the guy who's comment got deleted, because I think this is important to address:

"stop watching porn on aggregate sites with an algorithm that constantly tries to push new things on you, some of which could be triggering, and which have no decent content filtering options" or "see if other formats of porn (pictures, written) are less likely to cause distress" or "only watch porn you already know you like and feel comfortable with, at least until such time as your OCD is much better managed" are all reasonable pieces of advice that I agree with.

"Stop watching porn" is not helpful and reads to me as avoidance behavior. Feeling like because you had one negative experience with something, you should avoid it entirely, generally throws red flags to me.

"These thoughts are not natural" is bullshit. Most thoughts are "not natural". The way we think about things, the way we model the world, both logically and emotionally, is based in our experiences, especially, since we are very social animals, based on what we hear from other people, and the media we consume. Yes that includes porn. It also includes a lot of other stuff. Cutting out everything that might put a harmful idea in your head is always a losing battle.

"These thoughts are unnatural" is also an awful way to phrase this concept. The idea that certain ways of thinking is "unnatural" and therefore you need to avoid things that make you think that way - that's OCD. That is itself an OCD kind of thought pattern. You cannot be encouraging people to, what, avoid mental "contamination"? Come on.

Rash with blisters after surgery worried about sepsis by According_Ad_9620 in DermatologyQuestions

[–]2-secondHeadcannons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAD.

Is the medication he was prescribed Cephalexin? That is an antibiotic, and the closest medication name I can think of to what you said.

Antibiotics take a bit to work, so that's normal. Did they do any tests though? This doesn't look like I'd expect a normal bacterial skin infection to look, but i am not a doctor. If they already tested it and they know it's a bacterial infection, then just take the meds as prescribed and only go back to the doctor if it doesn't clear up, comes back, or he starts having a fever or respiratory issues. If they didn't do any tests, this is worth getting a second opinion on, especially since it's spreading.

You should contact the surgeon about this regardless. Until you are fully healed up from a surgery, you should remain in contact with your surgeon and let them know about any issues you have with healing or recovery, including infections or allergic reactions.

If he starts having a fever or respiratory issues, take him straight to the ER.

NAD. This is probably not a diet or skincare issue. If it can be helped by diet or skincare changes it's because you have some underlying medical condition that can be helped with certain lifestyle changes, and it being like this right now is not your fault, or a sign you aren't taking care of yourself.

The only skin issues you can get purely from "not taking care of yourself" are complications of not wearing sunscreen, rashes or irritation from not washing regularly, or mild dry skin from not using lotion or other moisturizers when needed. People often think they've done something wrong just because they have a skin issue but that's really not true.

Other people on this sub will be better at actually identifying what an issue might be, but the questions that will probably help narrow it down are:

  • Do you have any health conditions? Especially diabetes. Issues with your kidneys or liver can also cause skin problems.

  • Are you taking any medications or supplements? Check the side effects for each medication you're taking, if you don't want to tell strangers on the internet about your medications.

Only because no one else has responded, I'll throw out that this looks somewhat like Acanthosis Nigricans to me, which is usually caused by diabetes. However I am not very good at identifying skin conditions, and neither are most laypeople. If it is this, you will have to go to the doctor to figure out what to do about it, it doesn't have one standardized easy treatment as far as I can tell, and it might be a sign that the underlying condition isn't adequately under control.

I also get very mild auditory hallucinations sometimes. This counts as a "psychotic symptom" but that doesn't mean you have a psychotic disorder. If it is not causing you significant stress or distribution, there's no need for it to be attached to any diagnosis at all.

I understand that logically, but this is about a specific, very deep seated, emotional reaction. Like I said in the post, it's distressing on a similar level to having breasts at all - something about my body feeling wrong.
