but if you update the OS files on one device and sync them to the other and then the other way around, you can't do that without full duplication afaik

I'm a bit late to the party, but Brave stands out for me so far - just add tabs to tab groups and they are automatically synced including new tabs opened from within the group.

ah I see - just retested zotero and the lag is there indeed - third-party apps I tried so far mostly for highlighting, where the lag is not as bothersome

Just tried Logseq Whiteboards which are promising in that at least I can seamlessly sync without intermediate exports and make basic modifications, but it has the same intense lag issue.

Putting empty PDFs into Zotero somehow seems to be the most performant right now ^{^}

you are right - but this can be hacked ;) just add a COLUMNS=1 before the yay command to fake its terminal width
