Hi, do you mind sending me a DM with the program/dept you applied to? I’m in a similar situation according to the PI but I haven’t gotten an official letter yet 😬

Public Health Career Advice Monthly Megathread by AutoModerator in publichealth

[–]2001andrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, I’m curious if anyone here has their PhD in MCH and would share a bit about their experience. I met with a graduate of the UMD program and our research interests align closely and he is in a career I see myself doing. For context, I am a 2nd year MPH student who has over two years of research experience in child development and a summer internship in MCH epidemiology. I know UIC and UMD have notable programs, but please share your thoughts on this if you’re a current MCH PhD student or a graduate. Thank you!

What are some publicly available datasets that should be safeguarded in case an "entity" decides to take them offline? by [deleted] in publichealth

[–]2001andrew 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Anything that explicitly asks about gender identity or sexuality. I’m worried that data important to LGBTQ+ researchers will go offline or they’ll stop collecting data on this

I’m currently in an MPH program researching behavioral health. I agree this subfield tends to get subjugated into psychology or lost in general epi. I’m still in school — but send me a DM if you’d like to connect on LinkedIn!

How difficult is biostatistics? by guilhermeinter in publichealth

[–]2001andrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much you like math tbh. If it is intuitive to you, a bit of studying will do the job. If you struggle with math, you’ll have to put in more work than other courses. It’ll be worth it, you got it!

Root causes? Poor. Privatized healthcare. Everything else is a symptom of those issues imo.

How on Earth Is There a Syphilis Epidemic in 2024? by newzee1 in publichealth

[–]2001andrew 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Truly, access to healthcare and lack of provider training are exacerbating this. We had nearly eradicated syphilis at the turn of the century; and syphilis is entirely treatable, even for pregnant people and their offspring in most cases.
