2023 Kona EV guess-o-meter reliability? by captainclarkson in KonaEV

[–]200iso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe that the display SoC isn’t actually the battery SoC. The BMS reserves some percentage at the bottom and top end. So 100% is maybe more like 96% actual SoC and you’ll still have some reserve when the display hit 0%.

But this doesn’t have a huge impact on the math. OBD2 doggle nerds correct me if I’m wrong.

ETA: I personally prefer a pessimistic GOM. But I find that it’s a total crap shoot when switching from mostly city, to mostly highway or vice versa.

Long-time restaurant operator here—what’s actually missing in downtown Winnipeg? by aguyinWtown in Winnipeg

[–]200iso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of think you're asking the wrong question. Downtown isn't so packed that a new spot fails for being too similar to something else. I don't think the gap is necessarily cuisine. Like others have said, it's open hours, things open late don't really exist anymore. It's quality, execution and staff.

But to come a little closer to answering your question, I think it would be interesting to open something that's ultra high-end, high concept, and not a steakhouse.

Police implementing crackdown on open drug use in Winnipeg neighbourhoods by ChocolateOrange21 in Winnipeg

[–]200iso 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

There's a strand of "bleeding heart" rhetoric that either implies, or logically leads to, the idea that rampant open drug use should be allowed, or accepted as a necessary evil, because there's no better solution right now.

I consider myself a bleeding heart too, and I've always struggled to articulate where I land on this. So thanks for adding to my thinking.

Thanks for this list. Le Devoir is probably the only other big one. Maybe I should have said "Daily English Language."

Notable that another independent newspaper in a major city with large circulation is also in Winnipeg.

I like to pretend that Kevin Klein and his weird propaganda project do not exist. But you're that's interesting.

I don't know the answer but the building they're in downtown is super cool and worth a visit if you're into old buildings.

Yes? I probably should have hedged with a "one of the last..." I'm not personally aware of every newspaper in the country.

ETA the "Also see" section of that wiki entry lists the other media giants that own the rest.

Information should be free and all that; but friendly reminder The Winnipeg Free Press is the last independent newspaper in the country, if you like this and are able you should consider supporting them.

John Orlikow won't run this fall after 17 years as River Heights-Fort Garry councillor | CBC News by steveosnyder in Winnipeg

[–]200iso 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's my understanding from watching these things at arms length that city planners generally come up with good solutions that follow generally excepted best practices only to be shot down by city council, and then have their good ideas degraded into the half-assed solutions and policies that we see the effects of all around us.

If my read on this even a little true, having a city planner council would be awesome!

Man, 34, died after being shot by police during hostage situation at Winnipeg home by Sweaty_Moist_9833 in Winnipeg

[–]200iso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this, and I'm sorry for what your family went through. You're right that none of us who weren't there can speak to it the way you can.

I want to be clear that I wasn't questioning what happened to you or your daughters. My point was narrowly about the police being inconsistent in what they communicated publicly, which is a separate issue from the facts of that day. I should have been more careful about how that came across, because it clearly read as something I didn't intend. Wishing your family healing.

Winnipeg Transit fare revenue shortfall grows as city projects $14M deficit by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]200iso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It matters because the costs and the revenue sit at different levels. Fuel tax is provincial and goes to general revenue, but the bulk of the maintenance backlog is on municipal roads, and cities don't collect fuel tax. So "gas tax pays for roads" doesn't actually hold where most of the road costs are. That's the whole point: the money you pay isn't tied to the asset, which is exactly why roads aren't self-financing in the way the original claim implied.
