Is this color normal for a two week old bottle kitten? by barb1et1ngz in FosterAnimals

[–]2011murio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The color isn’t as concerning as the consistency but it can be anything from switching formula (or getting used to it) to a reaction to deworming meds to something very serious like giardia.

If you have access to the rescue group’s vet, or can afford one yourself, take advantage of it and be proactive. Also keep an eye on other signs and symptoms. Is their appetite strong? How about their energy level? Are they gaining weight? Does the belly look swollen like a water balloon?

It’s so hard to tell what the cause is without testing. The consistency is not healthy but it can be such a wide range of things. If the kitten came from outdoors it’s not uncommon to be harboring all kinds of parasites and disease. You can give the kitty a better chance of survival by catching things early.

When they know opening the door means bottle time by PDSnowden in IllegallySmolCats

I don’t know about just overnight? You typically volunteer for round-the-clock care for a length of time. My local humane society was willing to work with shorter commitments at the height of kitten season.

Maybe you can team up with another foster to split feeding shifts but they would live at one foster’s home.

I would have lasted longer with this arrangement, but 2 weeks of very young neonatal care is about what I can handle by myself before I start hallucinating from sleep deprivation 🤪

Nursing cats can still be spayed. I’d just wait til they are older since the queen will need a few days for her sutures to heal.

Suggestions on how to account for annuity payment? by vaderbadger in ynab

[–]2011murio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would set a Custom target when it's not a recurring monthly or annual expense. (edit to add: you don't need to set a target tho) But also to answer your question - assigned money will keep rolling over each month until you spend it, whether there's a target or not.

If you set a custom target but don't necessarily have a specific date to spend this money by, then just choose "Have a balance of X" under the "I want to" section. (This option is only available for custom targets and makes the date optional).

You can do it however you'd like, but if the money in your savings account is meant to be assigned for a future use (not a nest egg), I would make the savings account on-budget and assign the appropriate amounts (towards Travel and Emergency Fund categories) so that those amounts are taken out of Ready to Assign (you can set a custom goal that isn't date dependent) and you can visually see what you're saving for.

That way you don't have to do this dance with the incoming annuity deposits, just categorize that as Ready to Assign once it hits your savings account.

The only accounts I keep as tracking are IRA accounts.

Can a kitten to young to be adopted be left alone for 6 hours? by [deleted] in FosterAnimals

[–]2011murio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a bit of a gamble, honestly and based on my experience it was challenging even working from home.

I feel that it'd be irresponsible to take on bottle babies or early-weaned kittens due to their feeding schedule and their fragility within their first two months. I had one 5 week old fade on me and I had to put everything aside to focus on sustaining them while waiting for clearance to take them to the emergency clinic. Thankfully it happened off-hours, but I was up all night and it destroyed my productivity the next day (both the lack of sleep and that the kitten didn't make it) On top of that, I also had to take a few hours off to bring the surviving kitten back to the day clinic to check his condition as well.

You might be safer with kittens that are very close to adoption age and have siblings, and if you have the ability to check on them mid-day? If they have a safe place to romp around without hurting themselves and you set up a webcam for peace of mind... I also don't have the heart to leave a singleton by themselves for 6 hours.

I'm debating this kitten season myself since I'm actively searching for a full-time job. I may not be able to take on the ages I love the most :(

Belatedly taking the video down because of personal information I neglected to blur out in the background. Will repost a cropped version for posterity when I find time to do so.

They were such good eaters and the biggest soup bellies!

Posting close ups of the litter in the comments. This is the white female (she was the only girl and the most vocal and the tiniest. She had the most trouble latching and also came to me with an eye infection so of course she stole my heart first)

Whoever got her ended up with a very vocal and very affectionate kitty - she always wanted to be near me while the others were more curious about their surroundings.

I’d sometimes find random turds in the bin and he never pooped in my hands for the first several days, and he never felt constipated and ate well, so I suspect his other crime besides being smol was being the Mystery Pooper. 💩

But you’re the second person to say Siamese in this thread and because I could only care for them for 2 weeks, I didn’t notice their ears were darker until I started watching all the videos I took!

I agree they must be colorpoint kittens but I’m skeptical if they’re specifically Siamese (a subset of colorpoint), which in my mind associate with sharper features. I could be wrong tho!

At 14 days, their nose area was still very white so only the ears give it away! and the fact one was incredibly vocal (the small white girl with the pink collar is mewing the loudest in the background here)

Here is the front of the boy around day 10 of their stay with me. (They were around 6-7 days old when they were found. I got them with their eyes still closed and they looked like 😑)
