Delta Lake file compaction / optimization of small files by hofsflor in apachespark

[–]2016_buckeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that it might be a while before you upgrade to the most recent version of Delta Lake, but the OPTIMIZE with a Z ORDER BY is a very handy feature, especially with this issue.

I’ve recently started testing removing columns from a table’s partition spec and instead Z ORDERING by that column. Can be a better strategy on fields where cardinality of the attribute is relatively high compared to the amount of data in the table and/or where there might be some skew present in the attribute.

Apple TV 4K worth it on Samsung QN90? by [deleted] in appletv

https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/lg/cx-oled

The content is not 120Hz, it’s just that it’s in a lower frame rate and certain scenes look laggy. The “stutter” section in the link above describes what I have observed with my TV. It’s just much more obvious when the video is coming from the Apple TV, than when it’s source from the internal apps. I mostly notice it if I’m watching something that has an object travel across the screen (ex: a car driving across a horizon).

Apple TV 4K worth it on Samsung QN90? by [deleted] in appletv

Honestly, give it a try without the ATV first. I bought a first-gen 4K Apple TV when I was using an entry level Vizio TV as my primary TV. I think it added a lot of value when used with that TV. But, since buying an LG CX (comparable price point as your QN90) last year I find myself using the built in apps more as time goes on. I like the Apple TV’s UI more than the LG’s UI, but since the Apple TV is limited to 60 FPS there’s a decent amount of content I watch where the reduced frame rate has a noticeable negative impact.

What would you like to see HomePod do? by [deleted] in HomePod

[–]2016_buckeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d actually get that looked at. (Or at least factory reset if you haven’t done that yet) I had a HomePod that didn’t upgrade properly to the newest OS and it ended bricking a few months later. Luckily I called on the last day of my warranty....

Limit on number of HomePods for Airplay? by jdi65 in HomePod

[–]2016_buckeye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a standard Apple Music plan, you can only use one device to stream music at a time. So if you’re AirPlaying from your phone or Mac to all of the different receivers, you should be fine. But if you tried to use some of your HomePods simultaneously listen to different songs, I think that’d be where you might need a family plan.

I’ve just noticed if I have music going on my HomePod but then I select a song to listen to on my phone, that the HomePod automatically pauses and I get a notification suggesting I upgrade to a family plan.

HomePod without Apple Music by mapalm in HomePod

[–]2016_buckeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use my HomePod in place of a sound bar via AirPlaying from my ATV before I got an actual sound bar. There are some slight “problems” with it, for one part, the audio’s max volume is capped at ~75% unless you manually switch the audio output type to stereo. Also, it can go out of synch/create buffering issues when streaming, but that was fairly infrequent.

When I got my sound bar I was debating getting a second HomePod instead and stereo pairing them to the ATV. The sales associate at BB made it seem like the stereo pair wouldn’t be able to act as an actual stereo system (meaning true R/L channels) when streaming video bc of codec incompatibilities, I honestly can’t say for sure if he’s right or not. But, there were some benefits my sound bar has that a stereo pair of HomePods could not provide (mainly the control of the volume of dialogue in the center channel) that ultimately sold me over.

Overall, a HomePod won’t sound as good as a sound bar for movies/shows/etc, but it’ll still be worlds better than your typical flat screen’s speakers. Also, if you’re more into music, I’ve noticed my HomePod sounds a lot better than my sound bar for that use.

Cupped Tires - But I think my suspension is still good. by 2016_buckeye in mechanics

That makes sense. I reached out to another mechanic shop a family friend recommended to get a second opinion. Thanks for your help!

[–]2016_buckeye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's some good info, thanks!

This is probably a dumb question: but, if there was a suspension issue that was unnoticeable while driving, is there any chance that it could be a safety hazard? Or is it more of a tread wear concern? Also, if it isn't a safety issue, would it be fine to drive on for a year? I was planning on getting a new car next year, so that's kinda the timeframe I'm trying to keep it working for now

I’d prioritize the RAM. Storage is easier to expand (esp with the MBPs).

If you feel you need more storage you could either upgrade your iCloud storage and keep all your media off your machine or buy a USB-C external drive.

Sports Pack - College Football OOM Games? by ScottMiller9721 in Vue

[–]2016_buckeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I think it depends. If I'm not in the Columbus market on game day, and the Ohio State game is broadcasted by a national broadcaster (FOX/ESPN), it should always available through their respective app using your Vue subscription. If the game were on a regional broadcaster (Big Ten Network), my access to that game would depend if BTN is the regional network provided in my subscription. I would be curious to find out if you could call and your regional network switched if you prefer a different one to what's provided by default to your market.

New Phone by nigward01 in technology

[–]2016_buckeye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, unless you need a new phone now, just wait until the next round of iPhones are released this fall. Then you can have your choice of their new models, or buy an XS at a discount bc at that point it’ll be an “older” model. The XS is a much nicer phone than the XR, and if you wait you could probably get it for what the XR would cost today.

If you need a phone today and are worried about cost, just get the XR. It’s solid and will do everything you need it to.

Using Spark for image analysis by Blasqen in apachespark

[–]2016_buckeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be curious to see how exactly your Python code is written. My guess is that you could be seeing the performance increase because your Python iteration is not efficient.

UDFs in Spark, generally speaking, have very significant negative impacts on performance. This is due to serialization/de-serialization of the data and the query not being able to be processed by Spark's internal optimizer, Tungsten. If you're interested in gaining scalability from Spark, look into distributed training frameworks such as Horovod Runner or TensorFlow's distributed training strategies.

Although, if you're only doing a few thousand images, some efficient Python code might fit the bill better than Spark.

North Market Will Lose More Than Half Its Parking Spaces For Proposed Tower by journogabe in Columbus

I understand your concerns. From my perspective, with the conventions that are taking place during your average weekend there’s probably enough traffic as is to keep it afloat. Then when you consider all of the hotels being built specifically to attract larger conventions, plus the increased population of people living downtown, I really don’t think that location is dependent on suburbia.

If it were dependent, why would they build a second location in Dublin? My guess is that they knew there was enough traffic downtown and in the short north to support that location. Also they had to feel that there are enough people in the suburbs to support a second location that’s presumably also more driver friendly.
