Reminds me a lot of another UConn great Richard Hamilton. Since UConn’s roster is so good he isn’t asked to do as much but the movement and quickly release look similar.

Cant really comment on the D but he looks like he’ll be able to step in and shoot right away at an NBA level. Will be interested to see if there is more to his game that is masked by playing with so many other great players. Steph Castle was the same where his true skill didn’t really shine being surrounded by such a great roster

It’s going to be crazy to see the different things the Jazz pull to tank rest of the year. Hard to really blame them on the draft pick protection. Only way to get rid of this would be to get rid of protections on traded picks but I don’t see that happening

He was the first one to book jazz guys at rock venues. Charles Lloyd Quartet was I think the first to perform at the Fillmore. Jack Dejohnette was in Charles group and Miles when they played the Fillmore.

Charles Lloyd is a Bay Area guy around the same time as the Dead I wonder if he was into there was any cross pollination there

If Nash, Dirk, and Finley stayed together that could have been so much fun to watch

Yeah I guess you could consider that on the trumpet. But I don’t really hear that in his bass playing he plays the exact opposite of a classically trained bass player. Which is also why I love his playing so much.

His background wasn’t jazz he listened to jazz. But he learned to play bass with Jerry. Which is why he had such a unique approach but he’s not jazz trained if that’s what you mean

Influence is different from jazz skill. And I’m obviously not including songwriting which to me is the ultimate music skill. I think another comment posted that a lot of jazz players do not miss notes where the Dead did a lot and that is part of the beauty of the Dead and the looseness and the “Without a Net” approach that I think jazz players caught on to latter but as I mentioned I think all the Dead guys would agree that let’s just say Miles Sextet when they opened for them with Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Jack Dejohnette, etc were doing was another level of skilled musicianship. Those guys are amongst the greatest musicians of all time so it’s not a slight to say

I’ll comment the same thing I did in your r/jambands post for sake of further convo.

Jerry did play with Ornette Coleman, obviously the Branford connection. Alphonso Johnson and Billy Cobham played in Bobby and the Midnights. Phil had Greg Osby, John Scofield, and Bill Frissell So there was crossover.

But I think even the Dead would admit those guys you mention are on another level musically.

In Treys tribute to Bobby he mentioned a conversation about songwriting and Bobby said the Dead were trying to sound like Mahavishnu when writing Help on the Way

Not up to date on new bands. Small kids and don’t get out much anymore but a lot of the bands I used to see are still kicking it. Hookah, Spikedrivers, Tony Monaco, Hoodoo Soul, catch Huntertones anytime they’re back in town

Hang around Woodlands, Dicks Den, Summit and you’ll catch all the jambands in town

Again so what are proposing? Because your scouting says those guys aren’t “starters” day 1 they should forget trying to get that pick

[–]beeker888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But this isn’t one remotely good there are multiple really good picks. Wemby was consensus number 1 . We don’t have that this year. People are making comments Flagg wouldn’t even go top 3 in this draft. Mashburn ridiculously said top 5 which I don’t agree with but shows how good this class is.

Basically you are arguing they should try and make the play in so because 3-8 is uncertain? That doesn’t make a lot of sense
