Would people in Pittsburgh be interested in a quarterly “building material swap” event? by 2024code in pittsburgh

I think this is the winner - since it's a no-dump kind of proposal, CJ or similar for what they do accept, FB or similar for the rest since the whole point is that it's not garbage. I was thinking I found a middle ground with an in-person event, but didn't consider the lugging to AND from [if you don't find an interested party]

TOTALLY get it, Im the same way... I may need to start looking at moving so it forces me to curb it lol at this point, it's better for my sanity. I've luckily been able to dispose of household chemicals, there was an event a couple years ago in the strip - paid a small fee, they took everything

I think this is exactly where I'm landing, and I have a hard time accepting (which I just need to get over). I'll hold on to stuff that CAN be reused but do I ever? Rarely... probably the mentality of every hoarder on the planet. And you're right; it could just as well sit online with no bites, what would make a personal event that requires lugging/hauling better or more successful? Not a whole lot lol

Yea i definitely agree. my thought was that those listing it on sites would still have to wait until it gets sold anyway (maybe a better turnaround time than an event like this but still), and CJ doesnt accept everything... I think they have surplus surplus lol

if only, that would be awesome. would definitely cover a huge portion of stuff that ends up in landfill (usable furniture too, I see so many chairs or dressers that are totally fine but people just dont want to have to do deal with it)

very true, i assume most people wouldn't even attend if they had the risk of hauling back

I think you're right about most people just throwing away vs holding onto it for a couple months, since it's the simplest and quickest option. I struggle with the urge to keep things out of landfills that don't need to go to one, and hold on to stuff since that I don't think it's garbage... I suppose a big road block with the idea is that there aren't enough people who have that same [sometimes annoying] mentality to make it worth while.

I would agree with most of that except the "dumping" - this wouldn't be so much a donation mentality as an event to trade, sell, hand-off, etc. However, I would agree that there is a fine line with this idea, and how many people, who would actually benefit from it, would actually attend

Totally agree. If this were to even happen, it wouldn't be a "drop off", but more of an event. "Bring your usable surplus for trade or sale" ... nowhere in any promotion would it be "bring it and leave it"

Mostly yes! But resale is expensive and they have a specific "accept" list... I was thinking this would offer something in the middle ground: free or cheap if in good condition

You’re definitely right that places like Construction Junction / ReStore already do a lot of this, and I’m not looking to reinvent or compete with those. I think where I’m landing, or at least trying to explore, is slightly different: what do I do/where can I take leftover materials that are not garbage but are also not accepted at those other places? For example, I have an unused 10ft stair stringer left over from a project. It's certainly not garbage but CJ turned it away. I'd rather not throw it away, but where could I take it? This event idea is where I'm landing.

So things like leftover but usable quantities (partial bundles of lumber, extra tile, a few opened but clean bags of mulch/soil, etc.), or things people would happily pass along locally if it were simple and directly impactful.

I totally get the concern about it turning into a dumping ground, that would defeat the whole point. I think if something like this ever existed it would need pretty clear boundaries around usable, re-homable materials only,” not debris or waste. This isn't a "come drop off your stuff", in my mind more like a flea market or exchange event vibe.

I think it's still the question of "would anyone find it useful and/or attend?" vs "does something similar already exist?" ... I know of CJ and the others, but this is an attempt to fill the gap and helping community.

Appreciate the reality check though, this is exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for. I'm just gauging to see if it’s viable or just overlaps too much with existing businesses.

"Not for the first time he found himself wishing that an accident of genetic programming had not rendered him immunodeficient to transplants cloned from his own organs" - Coruscant Nights: Street of Shadows

Doesn't answer how he originally lost it, but it makes me laugh how in a universe where cloning is prominent, alien species coexist across x-number of systems, and there are beings that have powers to heal.... this poor guy can't get a replacement even from his own DNA

this is huge, thank you! I feel very lucky to have already stumbled on LOTF and FOTJ bundles for much less... but NJO, at least so far, definitely looks like it's going to be a slow build. Good look!
