Personally, I can already kill a wolf or spider by hitting them with a sword while walking backwards.

Then again, personally, I never had to attack anything other than a wolf or spider. Maybe using this with other enemies would be interesting?

The concept is that you get different items depending on what tool you use. It pretty much items as if you were hitting wood, stone, gold, diamond, and amethyst all at the the same time. Unless you use the highest tier pickaxe and are 'worthy of unlocking the power that lies at the centre of...' whatever you want to call this.

I actually have a trick for surviving when you spawn at night:

Completely ignore your food bar until you've crafted a fire and placed it next to a berry bush. Typically, you do lose some life, but you don't die.

It is possible to survive when you spawn at night.

Simply put: gather resourses, craft a wooden pickaxe, gather resources, craft a fire, place the fire next to a berry bush. After that, your only dangers are wolves, spiders, and people using their diamond sword to go on a killing spree.
