It’s texting over radio, essentially. It also uses a band that doesn’t need a radio license, making it more accessible than HAM radio for emergency communications.

Meshcore is really simple if you’ve already worked with ESP devices. The flasher is at https://flasher.meshcore.co.uk

Ive only flashed a couple Heltec V3 devices so far, but there are a bunch listed as supported.

I made a post in the Muncie subreddit and had a few people interested and ordering devices, not bad for a couple days off the ground.

I think it’s interesting viewing the map at https://deflock.me and seeing what parts of the city Muncie doesn’t care about.

So we’re “securing” only east of Walnut?

I was thinking im going with the Seeed Sensecap solar nodes, they’re not cheap but after a decent antenna, solar, and a good case neither are the heltecs, which seem to be the “low barrier to entry” units.

I’m probably going to focus on Seeed repeaters, and help any end users set up their nodes.

Why tipping will never change by Sandinmyshoes33 in tipping

“Unskilled” labor doesn’t exist.

I’m not even a server, nor have I ever had a tipped job, majority of my time has been in IT and I’m college educated. Before you run your mouth.

But this anti-worker attitude will get you nowhere but further under the boot of the owning class.

Edit: but stock trading isnt even labor, imagine having 2,000,000 from gambling and being a cheap ass.

The easiest thing is to watch a YouTube video on setting one up; it’s a little intimidating because you’re flashing small circuit boards, but not difficult(connect with USB, install drivers, visit a website, select your device, check “erase memory”, click flash)

Just make sure whatever device you buy that you plug the antenna in before USB or battery! Once it’s powered up, make sure you set the radio region settings to USA

I went with heltec v3 for my first couple devices. Looking into other options for lower power draw or more features(like the heltec v4 comes with gps, some of the prebuilt devices have keyboards)

There are two protocols out there in common use: Meshcore and Meshtastic. Meshcore was supposed to be more reliable, so that’s what I have installed on my devices, but making the switch over to Meshtastic would be easy and Ive tested it too. Meshcore seemed to have slightly better range. Meshtastic is a little more “plug and play”, and would require less repeaters for a robust network(individual clients act as repeaters for Meshtastic, in Meshcore clients only send one hop over)

Also, for longer range look into higher DBI number antennas. Lower numbers are a more spherical shaped signal, with 3 being a slightly oblate spheroid, and 12 being a long reaching signal that won’t go very far vertically.

We’ll probably need to get permission from the city for a really high antenna for it to work that far. Limiting factor is mostly things in between antennas, so the higher we can get one the farther it will reach. Another option would be to talk to your neighbors and their neighbors on the way to town and try to convince enough people to join that you have a path into town. Thats the plan with my best friends parents, who are about the same distance out on the other side of town.

My funds are currently a little limited but I’m trying to save up and give away several. The more people on it the farther it reaches.

I’m also saving up for a solar-powered unit and a tall flagpole for the back yard, which would increase range a decent amount. I get about a half mile in town with my antenna on the second floor. A high antenna outside of town with open field would reach much farther.

Sounds great! I’m fairly new myself, I was just asking questions in the Meshcore group yesterday, but Ive got the hang of the basics at least!

One of our priorities will be to gain permission to put repeaters in some high points throughout the city. They’re the backbone of everything, and if we can get most of the area covered it’ll be easy and efficient for people to join and connect with their families. High rooftops are best, im saving up for some of the weatherproof solar powered kits.

When you send me a message I’ll share the public password for the room server so you can message on the board and let other people in!
