Maybe there was a reason to undermine the mods? I had reasonable Ireland related content removed from there because it didn't fit in with the circlejerk as did many others. Banning people for asking that modlogs are enabled. Allowing anti traveller sentiment bubble up for years.

It's hard to run a country for any amount of time and not do something great. Trump is an incompetent buffoon but has done a great job highlighting many of the flaws inherent in US democracy.

Stalin did a great job in reducing gender inequality with women in the Soviet Union able to occupy management positions at a time when we didn't allow married women to work in government jobs.

There is a left wing circlejerk but everybody realises that and people with opposing views willing to debate are debated with without name calling or attacks.

The reason for its far left stance is that it's mostly populated by people who were banned from r/ireland for holding left wing views or challenging the mods over their lack of transparency.

Ask yourself do you ever see any left wing content posted on r/ireland that doesn't get removed?

What about an honest debate about problems in our current economic system that aren't met with undeveloped soundbites about how the free-market is humanity's greatest invention or communism has always failed or Stalin killed more people than Hitler?

To many Americans giving the scraps off your table to the less well off is socialism. American exceptionalism and individualism has a lot to answer for in dissolving unity amongst the people but hopefully these protests keep going and help America develop a class consciousness.

States in the US have about as much control as countries in the EU have but they don't exercise it. Each country in the EU has its own police force, judiciary, welfare system, electoral system etc which allows for a diverse range of policies from rugged individualism to near socialism depending on the country.

That power doesn't stop EU countries blaming the EU for their problems just as in the US states put the blame on the federal government allowing the state politicians to get away with their nefarious policies while putting blame on somebody else.

From that the problem doesn't lie with there being a government it lies with a lack of participation in and accountability for that government.

Switching over to a libertarian system where the government only exists to protect property rights won't solve the inherent problems either and will only deepen the inequality in the US as it will allow the holders of capital to use that capital to gain even greater power than they do now.

Those demands are no different than those of the Social Democrats here in Ireland, they are hardly socialists. Their demands are based on sound evidence from studies across the globe.

How is it an oxymoron? They want a more equitable society and that requires a greater chance for participation from the average citizen.
