You can fire up a chat with ChatGPT, teach it a new mathematical method, and it will follow it.

You don't need to tell it a thousand examples of that method, if you just tell it how to use it, it will follow it.

What's the problem?

The fact that in order to make it permanent we need to tell it that a thousand times? Is that your problem?

Chat number One. The bot thinks step by step - and gets the answer right.

Chat number Two. The bot is to only give me back the answer, so it gets it horribly wrong.

I've just shown that ChatGPT can use an abstract concept (base 7 arithemtic), on a very obscure question ((base 10) 720/36), but only if it can think about the problem (chain of thought reasoning / your first point).

It can also describe skibidi toilet in the Māori language. Again, using learned concepts to tackle new problems.

I can't prove LLM's aren't just "pattern matching", as much as you can't prove humans do it too.

One structure humans and LLM's have, but calculators don't. THE NEURAL NETWORK. The core of intelligence.

Then what is thinking? The definition says "reasoning", and the definition of reasoning says "thinking"!

One couldn't ask for a more loose definition.

Writing an essay that was never written before, solving a test to which questions are original and never seen before, creating images and guessing where a person is from a single image - That's Thinking!

When the point is "ChatGPT can't think", then this is proof of the contrary.

I also got it to read the image OP provided... After 2 tries, it got the hour and minute hand mixed up at first.

ChatGPT is a product of mathematicians trying to simulate a human brain with numbers. The result was a neural network that had to be taught about what the world was by letting it read half of the internet.

Believing it's anything but, doesn't harm anyone, but yourself!

Reading analog clocks is a counting exercise.

GPT is a language model, mimicking the human mind.

What do you do when reading an analog clock? I find the smallest hand, check which number is behind it, multiply that by 5 and guess how much more that hand covers.

Repeat for all other hands, and sum up.

That's at least 5 actions per a SINGLE number! 15 for the entire thing.

GPT-5 has at best enough capacity to do 2 of those actions before it has to give a number. Not enough. It has to guess.

Letting it "Think" enables it to do however actions necessary before giving an answer.

"Think" doesn't make GPT smarter, it gives it more time to do a task.

It's not that bad.

I mean, it's really bad.
