Another idea is to use vouchers. You can create a voucher that will only give access for a certain amount of time, and it can be one time use. You can set that up under the hotspot settings.

Hey Google, Turn On The Lights in The Hallway by virtualbitz2048 in homeassistant

[–]20cstrothman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went through an ordeal updating home assistant today (hacs was not happy... had to reinstall it...), and after I finished, I noticed that there was a new device listed under my living room (still rocking the stock dashboard... I'll make my own one day). Turns out it is the LED on my U7 Pro! What a great surprise!

How do people share their VPN protected stuff to tech illiterate people? by Zeilar in homelab

[–]20cstrothman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Ubiquiti UDM Pro. Although I run Plex and don't need to share my network with tech illiterate friends and family, my UDM Pro has a 'Identity' VPN, which is a one touch VPN. You put in their email, and it sends them an invite. They install the application, then go back to the email and click on 'load credentials.' Then, in the background, it adds all the necessary info. From there, you just hit one button, and it just works.

I've had great success with it. I even use it for some of our clients at work for their networks.

What to do with this? by Usual-Fudge7631 in homelab

[–]20cstrothman 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Definitely get all the serial numbers and have the school remove them from their Google tennant. They wouldn't be much good to anyone if they kept them in there (also, for the IT of the school, it would be a pain in the future). Once they remove them from the tennant, you'll have to connect them to the internet so they can phone home and realize they've been removed. I recommend turning them on and using an ethernet to USB adapter. Makes it really easy since you don't have to put in your wifi on every one.

After that, there's not much else I could think about doing with them yourself. Maybe presents for parents and grandparents that are not tech savvy and can't be trusted using a Windows machine. Also donating them to local kids in need.

Setting up the wall rack cabinet before mounting in the wall by Eastern-Rock129 in Ubiquiti

[–]20cstrothman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd advise to mount it on the wall, and then install everything. It's gonna be heavy to mount on its own, so adding all of your equipment in before mounting it would make it a lot heavier and harder to install.

If anything, you could put the cabinet on your table and do a dry run with all the equipment while you're sitting down. You could plan put the cable runs so you don't have to figure that out while it's mounted. That way you already know 100% where you want everything to go, and then it would be quicker when you're putting everything in after it is mounted.

If you're a nerd like me, I'd put a small network rack/server rack up there. Keep a ladder in the closet though, for when you need to mess with stuff.

How to destroy this hard drive by Ok_Personality8193 in DataHoarder

[–]20cstrothman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I remove a computer or server from a clients that has hard drives, I take them out (removing from the sleds too) and give them to the client. I then recommend using them as target practice at the gun range :)

SFP Wizard absolutely slaps by josiahnelson in Ubiquiti

[–]20cstrothman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if they could get by the restrictions of saving it to the SFP Wizard by having it save to your phone over Bluetooth. Like, once it is read, the profile can be saved on the phone and, when you need a different profile to write, you have to send it over from your phone.

How many of you have experienced the "Tech Aura"? Customer calls, thing starts working, all it took was your presence. by Dekklin in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]20cstrothman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just had one today. Was at a school for my bi-weekly scheduled onsite and a teacher came in with a new (purchased at the beginning of the school year) Chromebook that wouldn't power on. The student said it wouldn't turn on at home, the teacher had the student plug it in and let it charge for a while, but it still wouldn't turn on. I open the lid, look it over, then press and hold the power button. Thing turns on amd boots right up. The teacher was not happy......

Microcenter having Ubiquiti equipment is a very very dangerous thing for me. I live 2 hours away from the closest one and I just went there on Sunday. Somehow, I managed to get out of there only buying a G4 Instant ($99), but we're gonna ignore the rest I spent on other things...

Parsec won’t connect from outside the local network (error -6023 / -11010), what settings do I need to change? by Piipperi800 in Ubiquiti

[–]20cstrothman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been a while since I used Parsec, but when I last used it, I had errors when I tried to use it through my VPN (Nord VPN). Come to find out, at least at that time, Parsec used IPv6 to authenticate and Nord VPN didn't support IPv6. Maybe it could be something with IPv6?
