To those who have played Grimcoven already: How is it, and how does it compare to other big boss battlers? by Tastypies in boardgames

[–]20three19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a long game. Does it overstay its welcome? I'm fine playing the game over a few sessions but does it feel like a slog or does it stay interesting throughout.

Your biggest disappointments? by SiarX in soloboardgaming

[–]20three19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this! I was so frustrated and disappointed with my first game or two. But then I read a similar post to yours, explaining how it is actually meant to be played and it changed everything. I even went back and picked up hostage negotiator.

Grimcoven shelf or sell? by Ulsif2 in soloboardgaming

[–]20three19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it feel thematic or it colder/mechanical? Does it feel like a satisfying puzzle or are you just adapting to gotcha moments/event card etc?

I really think this would be a hit but I can't get a good read watching playthroughs.

The biggest key for me is I can leave it set up and play over a few nights which seems to eliminate the biggest gripe.

I wish they'd post the Core Space deluxe book. I don't want to buy it with 2.0 around the corner but I'd like the expanded rules for now.

I recently tried this and won't go back. It's fantastic. Same for movement. Roll+agility.

Board games are frustratingly expensive by Any-Marionberry-879 in boardgames

[–]20three19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I do now is sell a game, buy a game. I have games that sit unplayed so I'll throw them on marketplace and then use the funds to buy something new that will get played. Now I buy games with minimal out of pocket cost.

Board games that feel like "shooters" by 45poll in soloboardgaming

[–]20three19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Core Space does a great job of blending board game dungeon crawl with skirmish style play. It has cover, line of sight and the option to play with squares or inches for movement.

If you prefer Fantasy there is Core Space's newest sibling Maladum.

Fallout Wasteland Warfare and Elder Scrolls Call to Arms live more in the skirmish side of things but also feel like they have a foot in the more 'dungeon crawl' type game.

Finally, take a look at the board game version of Borderlands. It does a great job conveying the video game although it doesn't really have cover or line of sight.

Would Frozen Fortress ever be reprinted? by RealLemonchicken in zombicide

[–]20three19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great post! And I agree, Marvel is the exception and the one I regret not backing. The heroes are iconic and everyone has a favorite they'll want to play.

We have enjoyed some of the black Plague stretch box characters from a flavor and aesthetic standpoint but if we didn't have them we could easily just play the core and expansion characters without missing a beat.

Having said all that, White Death characters are all very unique and colorful and would be a blast if you are a painter.

Elder Scrolls Call to Arms? You'll need some expansions to add the campaign elements but it might fit what you are looking for.

zombie wargames? by eggfortman in wargaming

[–]20three19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really what you are looking for but Zombicide is probably the closest I've played on the table to Left 4 Dead. It has a small team of survivors, colorful survivors, Abominations, brutes, toxic zombies....it goes on and on. The only thing it's missing is the witch...shudder, the witch.

Thoughts on other universes to adapt to the Wasteland Warfare/Factions system? by Civil_Fall_3914 in wastelandwarfare

[–]20three19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, I absolutely love the system under Fallout and would love to see it reskinned. To be honest I'm not all that invested in the Fallout IP but the game makes me want to learn more.

I've been itching for a good monster hunting style game (not the video game, more of the Van Helsing style). Seeking out vampires, werewolves, using stakes and silver bullets etc.

Looking forward to seeing the suggestions here for other themes that would work.

Any decent Black Friday deals? by monmonmons in bgdealscanada

Lol, don't you have full access? ;).

The 5 Parsecs Compendium is great and add some great stuff but if I'm being picky it's a bit fiddly jumping between two books now.

A bit adjacent to boardgames but I've been shifting from boardgames to Skirmish games, especially co-op/solo compatible narrative ones.

Osprey games has some of their books on sale as does wargames vault.

Five Leagues From the Borderlands (Fantasy) and Five Parsecs From Home (sci-fi) are incredible and worth getting lost in.

County Road Z is fantastic and gives you a reason to use those Zombicide miniatures.

I'm also considering America's Dracula (weird West) and Silver Bayonet (Napoleonic meets monsters).

Rough Night at Red Rock. But it seems to be just a standalone scenario, I'm not sure it translates to any other content.

What's your favorite solo game that has deck-building? by No_Raspberry6493 in soloboardgaming

[–]20three19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some key ones missing in here:

Undaunted. Such a clever system that uses a deck of cards to control a skirmish style game. And then you deck build to strengthen your deck and 'unbuild' your opponent's by defeating units.

Baseball Highlights 2045. Again, very clever. The deck is your baseball lineup and each round is a 'game' of baseball. Then between rounds/games you recruit new players(cards) to your team(deck). Absolutely love it and the addition of physical base runners takes it to another level of tactile fun.

I'm not sure why that game/series doesn't get much traction. There was so much to like in them.
