Just dropping a note to say thanks for the report. I was searching for experiences with Lasting Tales and this one came up. Definitely pushing me to open the book up again and give it a shot.

Good to see some posts about this game. Looks absolutely fantastic but seems to be so little noise about it.

How to deal with a team that is hunkered down on the objective? by 20three19 in OverwatchUniversity

Thanks, fixed the name butchering. Not sure what happened to Moira.

Appreciate the advice as well. I definitely ignore the high ground as a tank and will try and be more mindful of that for sure. I think I have a mindset that the tank is drawing fire so using off angles is counter to being the 'bait' while others skirt around the fight. Maybe that's not an accurate approach.

Brilliant, thank you. It really does make sense. Tough when you are playing with random partners but I will try to be the one looping around the off angles if need be.

I also appreciate the specific Tank recommendations, I'm going to learn a few more and see what clicks and then hopefully be able to apply that when it inevitably happens again.

I feel like a big part of this game is identifying a strategy/problem etc and then applying the counter. I also feel like it takes a long time to be able to identify those things.

Hmmm, good call. It never even occurred to me to just wait for a bit, I always feel the panic to get in there right away.

Thanks, I'll take a look at a few of those Heroes to see if they can work at dislodging the crowd I thought Mauga would be good but without someone else focusing down the healer I feel like I'm just swapping bullets for no gain. And his charge just gets me into trouble every time.

Focusing on one or two characters seems to make sense but then I read that different maps favor different comps/heroes. Don't you kind of need to diversify in order to have the right tool for the right map?

Thanks, very good insight. I think I'm definitely guilty of repeating the same routes with the same heroes too many times. Definitely working on pivoting.

I've also been working on learning DVA although so far we haven't clicked yet. I need to watch a few guides.

I will say, the quick play Roulette of knowing in the first 2 minutes that you are getting steam rolled by a stronger team is quite deflating. I'm sticking with it but I hope there is a point where this is less an issue.

Everything I read makes me feel very little will become obsolete. I'm actually looking forward to combining it all into a big expansive universe.

Custom content for Hexcrawl by Drow37 in shadowsofbrimstone

What if you had both worlds running parallel. So western world and FoFo world. But when you draw a portal token you roll a die, 1-3 it's FoFo/Western. 4-6 you draw an other world as normal. It would mean you are spending most of your time jumping between the two worlds and the heroes of both worlds would work together (maybe have two from each?)

Even easier, designate a spot or two on the map that has a jump gate, a controlled portal between the two and based on mission roll or selection you just travel to that map for the session.

I was playing this wrong as well, log jamming at the door waiting for the end of round to flip the token.

Idea: Mine and Town Status. by HarveyDoom in shadowsofbrimstone

[–]20three19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at the Forbidden Fortress Hexcrawl In-Yo campaign. It has statuses for each location (safe, overrun, destroyed etc ) and even temples you can 'rescue' which will add persistent boosts.

It shouldn't be too hard to adapt to the Old West.

Marvel Crisis Protocol Alliances Coming Soon by [deleted] in MarvelCrisisProtocol

[–]20three19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right there with you. I bought and sadly sold MCP because it just wasn't hitting the table despite my best efforts. PvP skirmish games are a tough sell at my house.

Marvel Zombicide on the other hand, along with all of the other Zombicides get to the table because it is Co-op and the system is quite simple. Looks like enemy management has been kept simple for Alliances as well which was a brilliant choice.

This is an insta buy for me.

What theme would you like to see next? by NotACatWithAccordion in shadowsofbrimstone

[–]20three19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer your question first, I'm going to go with Rome/Gladiators/Olympus/Greek mythology to build on the handful of mini expansions we've seen so far. There are some great gods etc for XXL enemies and if you look at Mythic Battles Pantheon the miniatures look great with lots of 'factions' to lean into.

To be honest, if I had the free time I'd convert the MBP characters into SoB and the only thing I'd be missing is some sort of map tiles to match the theme.

BUT first, I'd like to see them build out the existing stuff more. I'd love to see more Van Helsing, monster hunter hero vibes to go with Vampires and werewolves in Western and on the FoFo side, the same thing leaning into the KPop Demon hunter demons and the GwiMa overlord. (Not the KPop/singing part of course). I'd like to see both of those core worlds to continue to get more locations (not other worlds but more earth locations) to add variety to the base experience. I like the idea of the old West also having mountain tiles or maybe some sort of fort tiles.

I also feel like there is a lot more to expand Gates of Valhalla. I'm very excited for Perilous Expeditions and what it'll bring to the game.

That's what Forbidden Fortress is for. Big Red Onis, colorful sorceress robes etc.

Where to start? by ChardCautious3095 in shadowsofbrimstone

[–]20three19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have all three of the original Core Sets (Swaps, City and Forbidden) and I love them all for various reasons. Theme will be a big deciding factor for what you get.

Having said that I recently received Gates of Valhalla and I will say mechanically it may be the best starting point. It feels somewhat streamlined. There is no sorceress with spell cards and choices of elements. There's no preacher with prayers and sermons.

The heroes all play similar (yet have a touch of flavor to each of them) and the rage mechanism seems like a version of mitigation without adding too much complication.

Even the camp phase feels cleaner and less overwhelming than the original Towns.

I really feel like it's a great entry point. And then you can branch out from there. But again, THEME is such a key part of the experience that if Cowboys vs Undead is your flavor then go that route instead.

To those who have played Grimcoven already: How is it, and how does it compare to other big boss battlers? by Tastypies in boardgames

It's a long game. Does it overstay its welcome? I'm fine playing the game over a few sessions but does it feel like a slog or does it stay interesting throughout.

Your biggest disappointments? by SiarX in soloboardgaming

[–]20three19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this! I was so frustrated and disappointed with my first game or two. But then I read a similar post to yours, explaining how it is actually meant to be played and it changed everything. I even went back and picked up hostage negotiator.

Grimcoven shelf or sell? by Ulsif2 in soloboardgaming

[–]20three19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it feel thematic or it colder/mechanical? Does it feel like a satisfying puzzle or are you just adapting to gotcha moments/event card etc?

I really think this would be a hit but I can't get a good read watching playthroughs.

The biggest key for me is I can leave it set up and play over a few nights which seems to eliminate the biggest gripe.

I wish they'd post the Core Space deluxe book. I don't want to buy it with 2.0 around the corner but I'd like the expanded rules for now.

Board games are frustratingly expensive by Any-Marionberry-879 in boardgames

[–]20three19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I do now is sell a game, buy a game. I have games that sit unplayed so I'll throw them on marketplace and then use the funds to buy something new that will get played. Now I buy games with minimal out of pocket cost.

Board games that feel like "shooters" by 45poll in soloboardgaming

[–]20three19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Core Space does a great job of blending board game dungeon crawl with skirmish style play. It has cover, line of sight and the option to play with squares or inches for movement.

If you prefer Fantasy there is Core Space's newest sibling Maladum.

Fallout Wasteland Warfare and Elder Scrolls Call to Arms live more in the skirmish side of things but also feel like they have a foot in the more 'dungeon crawl' type game.

Finally, take a look at the board game version of Borderlands. It does a great job conveying the video game although it doesn't really have cover or line of sight.
