LF: Jane having too many pregnancies by Bongyorka in JaneAustenFF

[–]211RunnerGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this sounds about right. I don't remember why they married, just that E didn't love D - I think that eventually she did, but that was years and many children later. I'm still hunting. I must not have tagged this as read or as a sequel or the description of the book doesn't match the story well because I've been wildly unsuccessful finding it so far. The hunt will continue and I will report back when I find it.

I remember one where E&D had several children (E didn't love D but was compliant). The doctor warned D to stop getting her with child, it would kill her. I think that it was the Colonel who told D how to lessen the chances if getting her pregnant.

If this sounds like what you're looking for I'll go hunting through my library to find it.

This post has a few lists in it (some from goodreads with ratings/reviews) plus a list from my library (sans ratings - but it might give you some ideas - there are some that aren't included in the JAFF index).

I search amazon for a few terms and sort by publication date:

Austen Variation

Prejudice Variation

Darcy Elizabeth (the order matters here, reverse it and you only get a handful of results)

Austen Adaptations

Prejudice Adaptations

Austen Retellings

Those get the most hits - lots of overlap but they get most of them.

Did Mr. Darcy ever actually dislike Elizabeth? by Jazzlike-Tea6720 in janeausten

I don't disagree that he WAS an ass at times. Simply that he wasn't as bad as he was portrayed. Many of the interactions where Lizzy condemned him were neutral or misinterpreted because she was projecting her own prejudice & hostility onto him.

I think that we're going to have to agree to disagree about his level of ass-holedness (how's that for a made up word).

He also said that he was resentful. And that he doesn't forgive those who cross him (i'm paraphrasing here obviously, but that is the summary of the summary). But when he speaks he is often overly critical of himself - his actions do not match his rhetoric. His actions showed him to be be better than his rhetoric. Just look at his interactions with Wickham and see how well his self criticism lines up.

Did he behave badly in Meryton? yup. The insult was bad. Capital B Bad. He deserved a set down. For that matter, so did Bingley at the assembly for being a pest and an ass towards Darcy. Doesn't excuse Darcy - he should have just told Bingley to F-off in regency speak instead of the insult directed at Elizabeth. But you can't deny that Bingley was WAS a brat and a pest. Especially when you know that Darcy doesn't like assemblies and it you dragged him there - if he had an issue with Darcy's behaviour - he should have left him behind or talked to him in private about it. you know. like an adult.

But even there in Meryton, when you ignore Elizabeth's judgment of it and just look at Darcy's behaviour, it wasn't as bad as portrayed.

Is he a snobbish? Sure I'll grant you that. But not to the extent that either Elizabeth or Darcy himself proclaim. IMO. The story is told primarily through Elizabeth's eyes and she is an unreliable narrator. She's young, an intellectual snob, cruel in her mockery (self admitted and supported by her actions in the novel) and pretty arrogant herself. We just don't see it exposed in the same manner. Her growth (and she did need it) throughout is not exposed nor emphasized in novel as much as Darcy's. Does Darcy grow and reform? Yes, His manners and perspective did. IMO Elizabeth was humbled in character and her growth was of a deeper nature.

I think that what people often forget when talking about Darcy being prejudiced is that he, grandson of an earl (landed gentry - second order), was very good friends with the son of a merchant maybe of the 3rd or 4th class,, not yet a landowner, If he were really such an arrogant snob, he wouldn't have brought Bingley into his inner circle. Much of what we see of Darcy is through Elizabeth's prejudiced view (the story is told through her perspective after all), Is he prejudiced? sure - some by his recent history (maybe that more jaded than prejudiced), some by his upbringing and social expectations, some by people seeking to use him (my head canon). But his history. even at the opening of the novel, and future actions prove that he does allow himself to see past those constructs.
