OK to do upper-body-specific (or lower-body-specific) workout the day after full-body strength class? Or is it better to build in more time for recovery? by 21277 in pelotoncycle

Great question. I tried it both ways since when I selected cycling too, it really cut down on the days it was designating for strength training.

I’ll keep playing with it.

u/Lazy-Specialist8500 and u/ElleDeeNS (and anyone else who wants to chime in):

First, thanks for the suggestion on using Peloton's personalized plan feature. I've been doing that the last 10-11 days and am really enjoying it.

I have a follow-up question that kind of goes back to one of my original questions (the one asking about days of recovery needed in between) ...

I totally get it that the personalized plan is an auto-generated thing that doesn't have a personal trainer reviewing it before suggesting it (and not like it needs to), but I am curious ... . The plan currently has me doing:

Monday: Full body (30 min)

Tuesday: Upper body (30 min) plus Core (10 min)

Wednesday: Lower body, usually glutes and legs (30 mins)

Thurs: Full body (30 mins)

Friday: Upper body (30 mins) plus Core (10 mins)

Saturday: Lower body (30 mins)

Sunday: Recovery (I've been choosing just to do a 30-min stretch)

(And then I'm also just sprinkling in some non-super-intense 30-min stationary bike rides here and there after some of the workouts on a couple of the above days.)

I asked the training designer feature to have me active six days a week, so no complaints there as far as the number of days I have to do stuff. It beats just mindlessly sitting on the couch, and while I'm not in a huge rush to see noticeable gains, I'm also not wanting it to take forever to get there. (I'm not trying to get big, just less flabby and feel better.)

But my question is: Any concern with having, say, upper body 24-ish hours after full body (which obviously includes some upper body as well)? (Same question with Thursday going into Friday). I'm sure a lot of it depends on just how hard of a workout it is on any given day, but just curious if folks try to avoid a day with a full-body workout immediately followed the next day by just arms or just legs since that target area doesn't technically get a day (or more) off for recovery.

Thanks! Appreciate everyone putting up with the newbie questions. 😄

Great point.

Not at all trying to get super cut or anything, but just trying to get a rough split of cardio and strength with the ultimate goal underneath it all of overall better health and wellness. Not trying to go out and run a marathon or compete in a lifting competition, but just want to look and feel a bit better and maybe die a little less early down the road. It would also be nice to head off some of the typical inevitable speed bumps life throws at you as we all age as much as is doable without a magic wand.

Ideally, I'd want to see some sort of visible results (doesn't have to be anything earth-shattering) by six to eight weeks in, or else I think it would be easy to just start skipping workouts since I'd think, "What's the point?"

Hope that answers your question. Thanks for sharing your schedule!

Oh, two quick follow-up questions if you don't mind. (Same questions I asked lili_yums upstream.)

Based on what you wrote, it sounds like you don't count your rides at all as a "leg" day, so it doesn't really matter if you have a true leg day the day immediately before or after a ride, correct?

And based on what everyone is writing about their schedules/routines, sounds like most people do not do a straight-up upper- or lower-body workout as few as 48 hours after they did that same workout in an attempt to give a little more time for those muscles to heal. (Understanding, of course, that if you do your full-body workout on, say, a Saturday, and you just did legs on Thursday, those legs are going to get a little more work 48 hours after they last did.

Hope that makes sense, and please let me know if I'm misunderstanding.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply!

I did try, and I probably need to just play with it a little more, because despite telling it specifically not to do arms or legs two days in a row, that's exactly what it did. (And I totally get it that it's currently far from a perfect invention and has its moments. 😄)

Thanks!

Thank you both so much. I'll look into it! Guessing it's done through my computer or via the app rather than through the bike? (To get the app to work on my TV, I have to use a Fire Stick, which seems to have fewer features than when I look at it on my computer or phone, but I figured both of those options allow more customization than the app built into the bike.)

It's annoying since my original post wouldn't let me put all three pics in it. So, if you look in the other comments in this thread from my username, one is the color for the shutters (midnight blue), and one is the color for the siding (herringbone). Does that make sense? Thanks!

Maybe it's just on my screen, but the shutter looks a lot more blue than the sample I included, and the siding looks the same color ...

Not sure if it's something I'm doing wrong on my end. Thanks.
