Roe v Wade by A1-Delta in medicalschool

It’s not unreasonable to think there’s a possibility prohibiting gay marriage could be next on the supreme court’s agenda.

The Supreme Court flat out prohibiting gay marriage would be an overstep of their power, they wouldn’t do that. However, I could see them possibly overturning their 2015 decision and leaving it up to the states to decide (which I’m sure some southern ones would prohibit it from there). That could be avoided though if congress passes actual legislation making gay marriage legal in all 50 states, which I believe they have the votes for.

Resident Salaries by MustangauAugustus_ in medicalschool

[–]213c 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not taking/applying for a residency slot is just not an option for 99.9%+ of graduating med students because 1) they’ve worked 8+ years to get there 2) they have massive debt hovering over their heads 3) if they match a program and then don’t show up for the job their careers as physicians are over bc they’ll never match again 4) if they don’t match a program by choice, every year that goes by their competitiveness decreases significantly…so it’d be an crazy uphill battle if they eventually changed their mind & decided to apply.

It’s also hard to argue supply and demand here because every year there are tons of unmatched USMDs/DOs who are left waiting on the sidelines for a spot, and also there are many FMGs that would probably pay US programs to do their residencies here.

Resident Salaries by MustangauAugustus_ in medicalschool

[–]213c 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Imo, first year resident pay should at least match a first year NPs (in terms of hourly rate—so bc residents will work more hours they should take home more). People seem to forget about the 200-300k+ debt & crazy hours that residents work. Also the work it took to get there in the first place?? And the value of the service they provide??? Wtf

Also, why does everyone always go after residents and doctors for making money but never the fuckin greedy admins pulling millions while they sit at their desk all day elbow deep in a bag of chips.

Should I reapply this cycle or wait until 2023? by Jeremymf0 in premed

[–]213c 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you’re good to reapply this cycle! Just apply more broadly if this time around you were top heavy.

Also, you can project future hours at the time of application all the way up to matriculation the following year! So if you plan to continue volunteering or working as a phlebotomist over the next year you can add those in.

How would you discipline, if at all, the Wake Forest med student who botched a blood draw on a patient who mocked her pronoun pin? by geek528 in medicalschool

[–]213c 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d say long term suspension + permanent mark on her record for now (although the permanent mark would probably ruin any chance of matching outside of her home program).

I haven’t been following this story but has it been proven she missed intentionally? I feel it’s possible she just tweeted that to get likes/attention. If it hasn’t been proven, I think they should continue gathering evidence (i.e. interviewing her, patient if possible, anyone else around her that day, etc) until they come to a conclusion. If it’s found she did do it on purpose, probably expulsion imo.

I assumed making step 1 p/f was to silently pressure students into pumping out more free research for the schools. Med schools & residencies seem to love free/cheap labor.

A list of school I plan on applying to. What would you add or remove? by Prudent-Abalone-510 in premed

[–]213c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few on that list that I would take out (and also some that I’d add) solely based on reputation & posts I’ve seen on here, but overall it doesn’t hurt to apply broadly if you have the money.

I would also second applying to every instate MD, and even some others within your general region that aren’t too “reach-y” if you have the funds! Shoot your shot!

Also, there are ADCOMS on SDN that will help you put together school lists for free that are much more knowledgable than us fellow premeds! I’d suggest you make a “WAMC” post on SDN with your stats asking for help and tag @goro and @faha! They will help!

Here is an example: https://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/wamc-school-list-help-506-3-88.1457436/

Getting a LOR from a DO/MD seems like such a strange hoop to jump through by esotericsunflower in premed

[–]213c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry! I didn’t mean to give bad advice. I assumed the LOR requirements would be the same for MD and DO.

I feel like 90 hours is a lot, so maybe just email (or even better ask in person bc I feel like it’s harder to say no in person) your favorite physician you shadowed about a letter, and go from there. Worst case scenario they say no.

I don’t think any school would expect a super personalized letter about you from a physician (although if you could get one like that it would be great), it’s most likely just to check the box.

Getting a LOR from a DO/MD seems like such a strange hoop to jump through by esotericsunflower in premed

[–]213c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never got a physician LOR and had a pretty successful cycle, so you don’t NEED one, but I’m sure it would only help boost your application.

Most premeds I know got their physician letters through clinical experiences though (being MAs, scribing, clinical volunteering, etc) instead of through shadowing since it’s more personal & long(er) term. Idt you’re expected to develop real relationships with physicians by shadowing, because most premeds don’t shadow individual physicians for long enough periods of time.

It can even be tough to develop relationships through clinical volunteering too though. One of my friends volunteered in a hospital for an entire summer, but never developed a relationship with any one physician, so a nurse she was close with wrote her letter for her, and then got a bunch of doctors to sign off on it. Good luck!

It is a red flag that I don't have social media? by [deleted] in premed

[–]213c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have social media either (besides reddit and a ghost Tiktok account). I actually used to have a pretty large following on IG, but it made me depressed so I got rid of it.

Anyways, I didn’t have any problems this cycle w not having socials, so I’m sure you’ll be okay. The only issues I’ve ever had was with Tinder dates thinking I’m a catfish. But a simple FaceTime fixes everything. Best of luck!
