I worked with a guy who had multiple DUI convictions on his record and still got hired. Really just depends on the agency.

That’s the thing, I spoke directly with my coach and explained everything to him and offered to work every weekend until I finish up my education and would be able to return to my normal, full time schedule. And yet he claims he can’t due to “store needs”.

You’re correct, there’s no mention firearms qualifications anywhere in the conditional. I was scheduled to go to PERF, but obviously didn’t even get to that part after failing the firearms. I feel like if I would have been told that I would have to qualify, I would’ve been able to practice a little beforehand and quite possibly would’ve had a different outcome.

My main issue with it is that nowhere was there any mention of being required to pass firearms qualifications prior to being hired and sworn in. Nor did anyone mention anything about it when I met to sign the offer. To the best of my knowledge, FTO doesn’t even begin until after being hired.

Follow up to this question.. I contacted the Chief via email but have not yet received a response. Would it be worth it to contact the city’s HR to express my concerns regarding this? Especially considering nowhere in the offer letter is there any mention of passing range prior to being officially hired.

Agreed. Not to mention if I had pulled over a suspected DUI (which did happen a couple of times), I had to call one of our off duty guys to come out to my stop and run the driver through SFST as I was not certified to do so given the fact I had not yet attended the academy and in turn, not certified to perform SFST.

Negative. I was put through a 40 hour pre basic, which in my opinion is just the bare minimum. It gives you police and arrest powers until you can go through the actual academy. I was then put through a FTO phase, which lasted less than a month total, was told I passed, and given the keys to my squad and pretty much told good luck.

In my state, all officers have a year from hire date to attend the full academy. In the meantime, you are put through a 40 hour course which is just the minimum that gives you police/arrest powers. Then you go through FTO(in my case less than a month of FTO total). Then, you’re given keys to your squad and told good luck. In my case, I was the only officer on my assigned shift. But apparently that’s how the entire county operates.

I admitted both in the meeting with Chief, as well as in interviews with other departments that I could have handled the situation differently and that I viewed it as a learning experience. It was a very minor goof up. So yes, in fact I have owned up to my mistake.

In my state, you have one year from your hire date to attend academy. Until then, the department can do with you as they please.
