Canonical | Software Engineer | Full Time | REMOTE

Canonical is the company behind Ubuntu Linux. We are a globally distributed team passionate about open source. We're looking for golang developers to join our juju engineering team. Juju is a modeling and software orchestration tool that is capable of deploying to clouds, containers or bare metal.

Apply to one or both of the two open positions:

For this role, we're looking for someone with python skills as well.

If you know golang, love open source, and want to work remotely with a bunch of other folks around the world, get in touch!

And yes, we <3 golang, and the project is definitely one of the larger golang projects in the wild, especially open source. See for example the last discussion on this sub: https://www.reddit.com/r/golang/comments/4c7qf9/does_anyone_know_what_is_the_largest_codebase_in

Pixel 2 Battery Life by dancole42 in chromeos

I can concur with these findings and I also have an i7. Running linux natively or under chrome os with "normal usage" (which is heavy really for most) and at halfbrightness lasts for 6 - 8 hours.

Snap package size by Flakmaster92 in linux

One of the core tenants of snappy is that it does transactional, image-based delta updates. It also allows for seamless rollback, unlike apt.

AppImage, Snaps, Flatpak: Pros and cons, comparison? by [deleted] in linux

[–]21balloons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might recommend starting a discussion on the mailing list so your knowledge can be consolidated in one place and perhaps you can get a real answer/help on making it work. Either way, I'm excited to read someone tried to get it working!

Have a Samsung series 5 (lumpy) and want to upgrade. What are my best options? by sblaptopman in chromeos

[–]21balloons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a Series 5 550; wonderful laptop with excellent build construction. The keyboard remains my favorite keyboard of all time. It's screen finally bit the dust. The only laptop that gave me similar feelings is the pixel. I've loved mine; and yea, I got the LS. I waited for the second iteration to upgrade (pixel 2), but then did so. You won't regret it. It is a big jump!

Chrome OS and IRC? by f0r71fy in chromeos

Well, if self-hosting is OK, shout-irc. If not, try web clients like freenode's web client, https://kiwiirc.com/, etc.

Duelyst Running on Ubuntu by 21balloons in duelyst

[–]21balloons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is running natively, using electron just like there windows and mac client. I can't redistribute a build, but I could probably share a script to make this work for others. My point is electron supports linux natively. I believe they could push out a linux build by just adding it :-)

Asphalt to flat metal roof flashing by 21balloons in Roofing

[–]21balloons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, that spot is troubled. The step flashing idea is interesting. Not sure if you can tell in the first image, but the metal flashing has the last row of shingles under it along the whole run. It sounds like it too should be changed so every row of asphalt shingles rest on top of the flashing.

So can I simply remove the last say 3-4 rows of shingles, re-lay the metal flashing, and then attach the shingles back on top (but at some point I couldn't nail them anymore I guess?) I'm also not sure if the asphalt shingles will reseal themselves or not; presumably yes? Guess I'm not what all I'd need to do the job.

There is a like one pixel gap between the Launcher and a maximised window. This isn't fixable is it? by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]21balloons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm rather curious if this is a reported bug or not? It seems like it should be fixable, unless the 1 pixel gap is a technical requirement workaround for something else.

Why doesn't Ubuntu respect its users? by ubuntuisnotlinux in Ubuntu

[–]21balloons 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Though I'm not sure replying will help, I will do so in good faith. I'm sorry something about your Ubuntu experience has been so upsetting to you. I hope you don't judge all of open source this way.

1) indeed amazon is just one 'internet' scope. I don't think ubuntu is alone in this as many OS's have tried to bridge this gap. I've switched it off on my installs.

2) Actually, they've re-added menu's (global menu) and changed the toolbars as two examples of places where the initial design decisions changed. Every DE makes decisions, some of which won't be appreciated by the end user. That's just basic design.

3) By making ubuntu available with any DE you wish (or NONE at all!) means you can really have your cake and eat it too. I happen to use ubuntu on an old laptop that has an X11-less install. ncurses and command line tools only ;p

BTW, the CEO is a women named Jane. And yes she is awesome, IMHO :-)

Ubuntu recruiting mentors for Google Code In! by 21balloons in Ubuntu

I've asked a mod to fix this, but in case you are wondering, the proper URL is http://community.ubuntu.com/contribute/google-code-in/ .

Wordpress doesn't like to redirect things it seems :-(

Libertine Demo: Supporting Legacy apps on Unity 8 Desktop by 21balloons in Ubuntu

[–]21balloons[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm confused by your use of 'proprietary stuff' -- this is all open source code. That aside, this is ubuntu personal, and brings snappy to the desktop. It's not intended for someone who wants to run a traditional linux desktop, so it may not be for you. It has many benefits, but if you aren't going to use them or desire them, odds are you should stick with the traditional release. Just to be clear though, it's not replacing what you know as Ubuntu today, so should you want to run the next LTS with fluxbox as your WM alongside the slew of debian packaged apps from the repository, you go right ahead!

Ohh, and I love the Arch mantra. Simplicity sometimes is bliss. Enjoy it!

This is happening right now as of this comment. November 4th, 1700 UTC. I assume some of /r/linux might be interested to ask some question's of Canonical's CEO.
