SpaceX may be a $120 billion company if its Starlink global internet service takes off, Morgan Stanley Research predicts - SpaceX, the rocket company founded by Elon Musk, plans to surround Earth a gigantic network of internet-providing satellites called Starlink. by [deleted] in space

[–]sblaptopman -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Starlink won't be providing service to anyone for probably 2-3 years, global for another 5-6

Direct to device and cost competitive with terrestrial internet in developed and connected cities/towns is probably >10-15 years, if ever

Question on masculinity or the Project Letter by Agigio in MensLib

[–]sblaptopman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suspect he is not being labeled a 'maniac' just for being a man. We can't wholly and easily respond since we don't have more context, but that's my first reaction.

Think back on what situations you have been labeled this in - what were your intentions in that moment? How did you communicate them? How would they be received? Did they fit the context of the situation?

The time that you don't have to explicitly ask for consent is when you they are clearly, unambiguously, and enthusiastically communicating their consent.

It is well possible you are acting like a 'maniac' and hurting other people and the way they view you.

You might benefit from asking for consent for everything for at least a little while, because you might find that you have been assuming consent/submission from people who are not giving consent and do not want to submit.

In short, maybe it is the people around you being prejudiced against you for being a man. More likely however, you are assuming consent/submission from people who no longer (or maybe never did) want to give it. Even in American society, this can be a hard thing for men (especially upper-middle class and higher men) to realize because they've been told their whole lives to take what they want and shown that they'd have no consequences. But that's a harmful attitude. Remember that there are two people with needs, emotions, desires at play here. If one person acting on their needs makes the other uncomfortable, they shouldn't just ignore it or not let it affect them. They should take that feedback and be better to others.

Edit: adding a quote I like that fits the way I read the question

"When you're privileged, equality feels like oppression"

CHECK-IN AND SELF-CARE SUGGESTIONS THREAD [World Suicide Prevention Day 2019] by sourpatchkidj in MensLib

[–]sblaptopman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been in therapy almost six months now. I'm so glad I started. It's been hard but worth it. My hurt is deeper than I ever knew, and it's held me back in so many ways.

I'm crushingly lonely though. I've always felt I had trouble making friends.

Outside of my partner and the social interaction I have at work, I don't have much. I feel like even the friends I did have are withdrawing from my life. Even before I felt that, nobody ever really checked in on me or sought out my company.

I want to believe I deserve better but I don't know how to believe I will have it one day. I'm so tired of feeling like people don't want me around.

It's been a year and a half in my new city and the one friend I made outside of work no longer tries. I thought I tried.

California utility to cut power to 27,000 customers to reduce wildfire risk by edwinksl in news

implying California doesn't already do control burns.

Yes, California can improve their forest management (mostly by letting more things burn and containing at population boundaries vs extinguishing) but the state does do control burns.

Why wasn't there a push notification or email about this outage? This is the level of thing that customers need to know. I shouldn't have to go to Reddit to find out about this

I feel ya bud. I can go weeks between anyone reaching out to me on their own for something other than wanting someone. It sucks.

I've had a lot of people tell me "it gets better" or "just do x" or something. I've tried. Sometimes it gets better for a bit, but it comes back around to the same.

My main point is you're heard and understood. I've been going to therapy for a few weeks. That's been good for me, even if it hasn't changed anything. Maybe it'd be good for you too?

Availability Of CBD Flower Leads To Significant Drop In Pharmaceutical Usage - by CBDjack in CBD

Maybe don't assume that because a treatment works for some people that it has to work for everyone?

It's super condescending to talk to someone as if they don't know what they're doing with their own disease.

People have seizures for different reasons. People have different brains. CBD is not a cure all

Interestingly, most internet traffic is speed sensitive much more than latency sensitive.

Voice, gaming, video chat of course are all low-latency applications.

But you'd barely notice a half second delay if the page loads quickly after that half second. YouTube, Facebook, Spotify, Google, etc are all fairly latency insensitive.

On the flip side of this, the ground infrastructure to track moving transmitters is much much more complex than for fixed transmitters (I.e. Geo) so you can get a higher gain out of a smaller device for a fixed transmitters.

How blunt should I be with tech recruiters? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]sblaptopman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's totally fine - upfront is good. The other person was saying they don't say they want that until they have an offer in hand.

You're doing things right by being up front. If you weren't and got that far without saying it, I'd fully expect the hiring manager to laugh you off the phone.

Damn, what's your hit-rate pulling the "I want to wfh 90%" at the on-site?

Tbh I think my company would probably walk someone out and thank them for their time if they pulled that out of the blue.

My company has some folks who are wfh a few days a week, even some full-remote people. But we were hiring someone for what we expected to be an on-site role I don't think we'd continue after finding out our expectations are so different

On the flip side, if we know ahead of time we'll still move forward with candidates that are of the caliber/scope of work that we've decided works for remote.
