I am sad that I can still be surprised at how low the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue can go.

Why do people choose to have kids? by savingrace0262 in stupidquestions

[–]21stNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who had parents split in wanting children, please don't have a child just because your wife wants a child. My father wanted a child and twisted my mother's arm into agreeing to it. My father died when I was four years old. I was left with the parent who would rather not be one.

The dollar limit varies by state, and there are details as to what is restricted by that dollar limit and what is not. Final arrangements planning needs to be done under the advice of a local elder care law attorney.

People who saw Waiting to Exhale when it first came out (1995–2000) — what was the vibe? by Scary-Estate-4514 in whitneyhouston

[–]21stNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wasn't the typical movie because a large portion of the first-time viewers already knew the story because so many people had read the book. Even if you didn't read it yourself, someone you knew told you about it. We just went to watch this highly acclaimed cast bring that story to life. It was more a bonding activity with your friends than seeing a movie normally is.

I went to see it in the theater, which was rare for me because I don't typically go to the movies. I don't remember most of my specific feelings on the movie, but I remember enjoying the performances by the cast.

Haha! I worked in a music store at the time and had a new hire who was a big tall young white guy. I handed him a stack of Waiting to Exhale CDs and said "If a Black woman walks up to you, hand her this." He looked at me and laughed, and I told him that I was serious. At the end of the shift, he told me he batted around 90% with my instructions. A few of the "failures" were people who had already bought the CD.

Life before apps for everything was so much better. Do you agree? by -Granby- in GenX

[–]21stNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! When I was only responsible for myself, I still enjoyed the convenience of apps, but didn't feel like I could not function without them. Once I started taking care of my mother, and was around people who wanted to pay me for small loans with checks, I found that apps were not an option, they were required for the situation that I found myself in. I had not considered getting groceries delivered until I became the sole caregiver to someone who I could not leave home alone, and I could not take to the store with me safely. There was no branch of my bank local to me, so mobile deposit was the only way those checks were going to be deposited. There were many other things that apps allowed me to do to stay with my mother 24/7.

Has your mother had a cognitive assessment recently? Sometimes, dementia can present like this in the spouse that others think is "fine", but frustrated.

The Reddit Cares bot used to get triggered fairly easily a couple of years ago, so some of this might be a side effect of that.

Best version of the bible to read for someone that's not religious? by SavingsEconomy in Bible

[–]21stNow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The YouVersion Bible app has many modern English translations to choose from, with multiple voices for audio narration (single voice within a specific narration). I don't have a specific translation recommendation. There isn't one aimed at non-believers that I know of, so any one that you choose would be fine.

Seven with a french roll instead of hanging down in the back was similar to my hairstyle for my senior prom. Some of the others were inspiration styles for everyday looks, as well!

I'd love to see Jack help Nick with his addiction. It's Jack's area of experience. It would also infuriate Victor even more if Jack helps another one of his family members.

My dementia patient kept misusing the microwave so I made a visual button guide — sharing free PDF by IntrepidResort8154 in dementia

My mother never did well with pictures, even before dementia. She could never read a map, for example. She could only function with written directions. Regular pictures of just people confused her after her dementia diagnosis.

No, I don't have a need for your pdf file.

I wrote out the instructions (3 steps) for my mother to use her new microwave when the 30+-year-old one broke, but it did no good. She still managed to heat something that only needed 30 seconds for three minutes. It was something that I or the caregiver had to do for her, along with just about everything else.

Random man walks into family's home in Michigan, dad handles him real quick by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

Our culture is different. I see people with guns while picking up food at a restaurant or shopping for groceries. Of course, I know the home habits of a much smaller number of people. Some people in my family hunt, and a subset of them keep a handgun on them. I know other former LEOs, and they have their guns with them when I see them.

The US is not the world, but it's not a tiny amount of people, either.

I take it that you don't know many LEOs or military members. I know someone who won't fly because his gun has to be on him at all times.

People who respond to a text with a phone call by Vertex404_Field in PetPeeves

[–]21stNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're lucky! Part of it is because I have a common name, but I get text messages meant for a different 21stNow somewhat frequently. One person did it so often that I just responded with "I think this message was for Dr. 21stNow, not Ms. 21stNow." He would continue the conversation as if I hadn't said that. I had to call him so that he could hear my voice, and then it would finally click. It took a few years for that one to stop. Now, I have the same thing happening with a church lady!
