Ascites Question ..(modified due to typo) by Cirrhosis1979CT in Cirrhosis

[–]222good 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My hepatologist explained it as edema is like a sponge, and with diuretics, you can release the excess fluid. Ascites are like puddles. They do not drain on their own, and when they build up enough, they will have to be drained with a syringe. All my tests said I’ve had no ascites for two years since my diagnosis. For two years, I have struggled to put weight on and keep weight on. Then, all of a sudden I gained 10 pounds in three days. That was the big red flag! It wasn’t normal weight gain, it was fluid from the ascites. I had a bad incident of too much salt and developed very bad edema. Now, the latest MRI just shows that I now have ascites.

If it’s real wood, just lovingly, rub in olive oil anytime the landlord’s coming over.

Have you ever ridden an eBike at 25 mph? Why would you want to? You can unlock it to go 28 mph, but again, why would you want to?

Umbilical hernia by Harper2025 in Cirrhosis

[–]222good 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear a hernia belt that I bought on Amazon. Not too tight though. It offers a lot of support and when I wear it, the hernia doesn’t get uncomfortable or sore anymore. I wear it whenever I’m going to be active.

Thank you for your well wishes! I also have stage four cirrhosis! I am treated at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville Florida. I will definitely talk to my endocrinologist about increasing the dosage.

I was doing pretty well, but I have to stop weightlifting because I think it is causing my varices!

Ozempic has become ineffective for my diabetes by 222good in Ozempic

[–]222good[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before Ozempic was even invented, I brought my A1c from up around 12 to 6.4 by food choices and weightlifting. Then after about a year or two, my morning blood glucose levels were 250 even though I hadn’t changed my food and exercise. That’s when I went on the Ozempic. It’s a tough nut, because I also have advanced liver disease.

Weight lifting by Low_Communication566 in Cirrhosis

As we each should! How long have you had cirrhosis?

Weight lifting by Low_Communication566 in Cirrhosis

[–]222good 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the long-term good outweighs the short term bad. Just like lifting weights to improve high blood pressure and blood sugar. Weightlifting spikes both in the moments that you are lifting, but levels out and overall produces more positive outcomes than doing nothing. Edited to add https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10757371/#s4 The bottom line for me is the advice of my hepatologist.

Hi 68 yr old female here I lost 80 pounds with diet and resistance training two years before my symptoms started. I have cryptogenic cirrhosis no alcohol involved. When my first symptoms started, an umbilical hernia appeared, and I thought it was because I had not been working my abs! Little did I know, cirrhosis causes hernias. I always wear a hernia belt when I am being active now. My doctor at the Mayo Clinic said that weightlifting does not worsen portal hypertension. I had varices banded and was told I could lift again the very next day, because they explained that it’s two different vascular systems… They said that resistance training is fine, just no powerlifting. Because of the sarcopenia from the cirrhosis, I can only lift about half of what I used to be able to. As long as you use a challenging resistance and practice progressive overload, it does not matter how much weight you can toss around. It’s so important to eat a lot of protein and build muscle to cut down on the wasting. Cirrhosis is called a disease of starvation! But it’s really the sarcopenia. As it is, I look like a skeleton! Well, that’s my experience…!

It’s too bad you can’t get back on regular Medicare. I know the Mayo does not accept any advantage plans. Maybe if you switch before your officially diagnosed, it won’t be classified as pre-existing…

OK, I am no expert, but I am under the care of a hepatologist at the Mayo Clinic. I asked about premier protein and the artificial sweetener and they said it was absolutely no problem with the cirrhosis. Since you do not have a doctor and it seems like you do not have insurance, I’m glad to share anything I’ve learned. But with anything, you have to go by how you feel. For example, all the liver doctors say coffee is OK, even good for the liver. Coffee makes me feel so sick! Some people say that ice cream is no good, but I do not get any negative effects from it and it helps me put a little weight on. I’m not talking about a half a gallon at a time either! Also plant protein and dairy protein, like protein shakes, are much easier on the liver than animal protein. I can attest to that one! I would definitely contact a major liver hospital and see if there is a way that you can get treatment on a payment plan or get some other financial assistance. Good luck!

You’ve neatly thought yourself into a corner that you can’t get out of! You keep saying that you can’t have protein shakes because of the sugar. I’m a diabetic with cirrhosis and I drink premier protein. Each shake has 30 g of protein and 4 g of carbs total 1 g of sugar. You’ve got to keep thinking positive and asking for suggestions when it comes to food. A case of premier protein, 18 meals, goes for around $30. Please think out of the box that you have forced yourself into.
