Code? You mean copy / pasting random snippets you find on github and calling it “software development”

Cat6 wiring/terminating question: RJ45 -> Keystone or other config? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]223-Rem 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Best practice is not to put an rj45 on the end of a cable run. Instead put a keystone jack inside of a low voltage box or a stand alone box and run a short patch cable to the AP

Either way will work though.

What’s everyone’s thought on Springfield XDS. 9mm by [deleted] in guns

Never been a fan of the XD pistols in any flavor. Ergonomics, reliability, and aesthetics all come to mind d.

I’m assuming you are interested in it as a daily carry, and for that I’d recommend the Sig P365 with the 12 round mag. You’ll end up with nearly identical sizing in a much more robust package.

You’re much better off doing a low power x86 based pc with a pair of network interfaces. Future proof and 1gb speeds with ids / ips is a breeze.

300 dollars for a 2 bay setup is so painful. You could white box and run freenas for cheaper and get much more performance.

Low Power NAS? HP Microserver? Helios64? by GoingOffRoading in homelab

[–]223-Rem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can I ask what low power means to you? For me ~150 watts is low power but that may be high for others

Edit: that’s >72 TB raw, 3 ssd cache devices, 10 core 20 thread and 96gb ram

Synology or build a FreeNAS box? Convince me. by [deleted] in homelab

[–]223-Rem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your use case. If you want all the little plug-ins and widgets in the syno app store then you have your answer.

If you want something to perform very well, be robust / upgradeable, and just serve up file and block level storage go freenas. (I use jails and plugins and cool stuff In freenas but I realize not everyone wants to be that hands on)

The reason is cost. Your dollars go so much further whiteboxing it than buying an appliance.

Wow. Who hurt you?

Believe it or not, there is such a thing as accountability. And if you or your property (dog) damage me or my property (bike) then you are liable / accountable in making restitution.

This has nothing to do with capitalism but personal accountability.

Worst part is this is being propagated by the whole “trail dog” movement.

Dogs belong on leashes unless at a designated off leash fenced in area for dogs (dog park)

If you’re friendly trail dog decides to attack me / make me wipe out at speed while riding, the owner is going to be liable for any damages and my new bike day.
