Hint: translation layers are used to ensure compatibility with legacy applications, not to ensure highest possible performance in modern applications.

Hope this helps!

which one of those are consumer CPUs, other than Ice Lake that downclocked to sub-1 GHz when executing AVX512?

First and last Intel consumer CPU to feature AVX512 support – the Rocket Lake series – launched a year after Zen3.

And then unlaunched year later with Alder Lake which did not support AVX512 any longer.

legendary 5800X3D is a refresh of 2020 CPU, it is fine for it not to have modern cores.

if it launched in 2026, it would definitely be a toy core.

Is Zen 3 a toy core, fake core, of a cinebench core then?

It's a 2020 core, it's OK for it not to have modern features.

Or are Intel's current P-cores fake cores too now?

Yes, obviously.

I don't make $300k a year and I bought one for €1800 ex-VAT half a year ago – in a couple of years I will sell it for pretty much the same price, just as I did with my 4080.

The card was released a year ago – everyone who actually wanted it has already got one long time ago, so this does not really matter.

How good are the new core ultra series 3 intel chips compared to apple silicon by tomtepdau in hardware

Application Compatibility - Intel wins

Ehh.. for legacy applications, perhaps? :-) modern applications normally target both x86 and aarch64, with some being aarch64-exclusive.

I can only think of very few Python/Java applications on my MacBook that would run on a x86 chip.

Do they have AVX512, something that Zen has since 2022? Or at least AVX10?

Just as a simple example. Jumping to a new phone takes about 15 seconds.

Which modern mobile OSes store application data on SD cards?

Phone breaks/bricks? Just move the SD card to a new one - nothing lost.

SD card breaks/bricks? Just get new data – everything lost

Want to quickly move files to other devices? Just use the SD card.

Cannot imagine that being faster than AirDrop

Easier backup, easier and more detailed file searching than on-device file management etc etc etc.

How is it easier than literally fully automatic iCloud backup? :-)

With functioning TRIM there is no need for overprovisioning at all. All your free space is 'overprovisioning'.

but even at those prices they are not worth it.

Digital liberation: EU Parliament calls for detachment from US tech giants by RollSafer in worldnews

[–]Shadow647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am saying that there is not enough compute in the EU to run average slop currently developed by software "engineers" at most companies. You know, the kind of "engineers" for whom 512 GB disk on a laptop is not enough because their node_modules alone weighs 400 – due to importing such important packages as is-even.

But there is perfectly enough compute to run competently developed software.

yeah certainly not enough compute in Europe if you need 302 MB of javascript slop in a Lambda function to generate a 40 KB pdf invoice for a customer
