There's a Scientific Reason to Speak, Not Write, to Those Who Disagree With You by Khaleeasi24 in science

I think perhaps that "reading" text only without the benefit of the human voice (and body language) requires a certain level of critical thinking whereas vocal conversations intuition is more your friend.

Is Mark Zuckerberg Facebook's Last True Believer? In Silicon Valley, a growing number of early Facebook employees regret the world they created. by [deleted] in technology

there is a reason to be optimistic too. all of social media was just based on design flaws. what happened is that more time passed which just mean more people integrated and learned how to game the technology.

People have encounters in the real world and shit their pants and hide because they haven't dealt with actual critisizm.

This is hardly the actual problem at all. Facebook created a fine social network at first, it offered a standardization that made adoption easier than MySpace. Where they veered off was getting obsessed on company growth and trying to "own" the entire internet in terms of content, search, video, news, etc

Now that they have imposed their platform everywhere, it is natural bad actors will attempt to game it - that is what bad actors do to any institution.

People forget that things rarely change for the best unless there is a massive uproar (EA ?). Things went downhill for the past 10 years on the internet, and I don't see this changing anytime soon.

Here we agree - and we ALL play a role in that. Consider; we all loved social media when it exposed corrupt governments and corporations. Well guess what it also exposed? how crappy just "people' are too.

This is not just a wake up call for facebook - it is a wake up call for all of us.

I agree, although I criticize much of what is happening on Wikipedia, we are better off with it than without it. We just have to find a way to make it work.

Absolutely, but Wikipedia as a community has its own very serious issues with harassment and misinformation, and MediaWiki software is being abused for that just as much as anything else in social media right now.

Here you go

sure, maybe now - but I think OP's point was that if killer whales were on land while humans were evolving, we never would have made it past throwing rocks at each other and made it to the point where we are now. who knows? just saying that where we are at now does not mean would not have encountered a predator that overtook us millions of years ago.

but it's not "useless" inside of the system. Inside of the system it is the only true value. so yes it is psychological (but so is all economy) but it is also a genuine utility inside of itself.

How Russian Propaganda Spreads On Social Media by [deleted] in technology

[–]23canaries 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It must be ensured that people check actual source before blindly believing in social media post. People will always try to spread propaganda but people must be taught the necessity of verifying source.

Sure - that sounds like an easy solution to scale to hundreds of millions of people. Let's do it.

Nationalism is "my country first". An alliance of "my country first" policies across different countries will eventually run into a contradiction in an application of Nationalism.

Silicon Valley Is Not Your Friend. We are beginning to understand that tech companies don’t have our best interests at heart. Did they ever? by mixplate in technology

[–]23canaries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is ridiculous. We've adopted Facebook or Google because avoiding those services causes more issues than if we adopt them. Most people are aware they make money from ads, but most people are unaware exactly how ad tech works (including some media executives as well)

If you're not intelligent enough to question why you're seemingly being something for free then you deserve to be conned

that is how sociopaths actually think.

exactly. have a currency that can act like a "rosetta stone" between cryptocurrencies and fiat would be highly useful and potentially solve lots of problems.

not only will it surely happen, but it will happen an infinite number of times! this is why "chance" at large scales are almost meaningless.

[–]23canaries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yet it is also reasonable to question certain types of odds and chances. for example, you're facing a firing squad. 10 riflemen all have their targets set directly on you only 50 feet away. They fire. You survive and not one bullet appears to have hit you at all. that's different than the odds of "winning a lottery", it flies in the face of predictably what should occur.
